Paul Mann is a gruff old man, and he won't put up with filibusters railroading his classes, which I really appreciate, since he's one of the most brilliant people I have ever come across. People say he's intimidating because of his rough exterior, but trust me when I say this, Paul Mann is a gem. He will engage you aggressively, yet eloquently.

A rather scary guy who holds no hands. He'll call you out if your interpretation of a text is shaky. I feel like he loves literature more than teaching. If you're tough, work hard, and keep engaging with him, though, he'll warm up to you and reward your grit. He is really smart, but mostly for very specific subjects.

I was at Pomona from '01 to '06 (took a year off in '04). Next to Deborah Burke, Mann is the professor who had the greatest impact on me. His classes are not for the faint-hearted or people just looking for idle intellectual exercise, but for anyone gripped by a real search for meaning, as Mann is himself. He is the real deal. Highly recommended.

Not as smart as he seems. Probably why he hoards knowledge rather than teaching. Avoid. I changed majors because of him.

Mann is a pretty scary guy, but you know you're in the presence of genius when you sit in his class. All right, maybe not GENIUS, but pretty darn close. He encourages, not nags for, participation and the discussions are always engaging and interesting. I guess he's one of those profs that you either love or hate. Give his classes a chance...

This man is a genius. Honestly, he might seem intimidating, but he is deep down a nice guy. Take his class. Be prepared to think. And don't be surprised if he makes you feel like**** if you **** up and do poorly. But, if you appreciate honesty, this man is for you!

Extremely intelligent, well read, articulate, philosphical, wonderful example of the human mind. Ornery, honest, wants you to argue with him--and intimidates the hell out of me. although I admire him so much i can never speak up in class.

this class is amazing as long as you're engaged. prof mann seems intimidating but he's also just a big teddy bear who is misunderstood. you work had in his class because you don't want to disappoint him, kinda like a good parent. he's got an incredible mind and a ton of insight so be on the lookout!

This is one angry professor--sarcastic & bitter. He made me feel like I was dumb every time I opened my mouth; and don't have a different opinion than he does--he'll shoot you down. Ugh! Take at your own risk.

My experience with professor Mann was horrible. I was terrified to speak in class, and when I mustered enough courage to go to his office hours he made me want to cry. He constantly complains about Pomona and encouraged us to attend a technical college instead.

he is a very intelligent, educated prof...but we could all tell he didn't want to be there. it's hard to get excited about a class that the professor doesn't want to be teaching. however, i would recommend taking one of mann's other classes.

I found his course really challenging, but I really liked it. He is SO smart. I was intimidated by him (it may be the class topic that made him scary, because he was so serious), but I was often scared to speak in class or to go up to him after class.
