Comment:
Dr. Joyce is the worst math professor I have ever had. He does not facilitate an environment, where you can truly understand the material. He does problems on the board, but fails to explain each step in solving each problem. I learned and comprehended the material more on YouTube, than from him. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR EVER!

Dr. Joyce was a good professor. He offered weekend study sessions prior to the exams and provided guides for the exam. Two things annoyed me though: not being able to use a calculator, and the fact that we had to scream to answer any questions since he insists he's losing his hearing. His humor is strange, so you need a good sense to get through.

Seriously one of the best professors I have ever had. He was entertaining and really knew his stuff. I was on the fence about pursuing a math degree but taking this class with this professor made me want to re-enroll at umbc.

Although he is very rude and swears a lot, he is not a bad person. This class was EXTREMELY hard and I'm not generally bad at math. I had to come every Saturday to attend his office hours and I spent 2 hours every week at tutoring center. The way he explains material is just awful. He is not a tough grader though and gives partial points often.

Love the Guy as a person. DESPISE HIM AS A TEACHER. Older guy on his last leg of teaching. Would never take him ever again, and we got along great. Save Yourself the trouble or just expect to be teaching yourself the entire semester.

Extremely unclear and unstructured. I would not recommend taking his class if you expect a structured learning experience. We were not even given a syllabus. Your entire grade is based off of 3 tests plus the final exam. He will drop the lowest test to help your grade. He is a nice guy, but he simply cannot teach well. Do not take him.

Excellent professor, the methods and the approaches he used are the best. The most I enjoy about his class is not using calculator. The way he view on math problem is different and he will skip some non-sense and annoying problems. If you really understand the way he teaches, you don't have to worry about math in the future.

Dr. Peter Joyce is an excellent professor. I jus took math 083 over a five week period and I learned more with him in five weeks than I did with any other teacher in previous math classes. He shows a quicker method and its better to understand than the confusing text book. He will work with you as long as he sees that you are trying your best.

If you don't say that you need an explanation then he won't give one. Usually skips steps while doing problems on the board. He knows his math and is will to help you but you have to really want to do good.

change professors immediately. knows his stuff, however is a terrible teacher. stands at the front of the class and does problems on the board, doesn't explain what he is doing and cannot clearly explain it even if you ask. tests are nothing like what you "learn" in class. i learned more from the girl next to me then my own professor.

He is funny and weird. However, his class is only easy if you like math and are willing to learn, it is not an easy A unless you are a good test taker, because your grade is based off of 3 tests and a final, nothing else. I was pretty pleased because i like math.

An excellent professor, who does everything he can to help his students do well (extra credit, etc.) He does jump quickly from topic to topic, but I didn't have any problem keeping up. He is very approachable, and always answers questions.

He is a great teacher for math and comp sci majors. If you're not into math, he is hard to follow. He is extremely intelligent, excited about math and computer science and passionate about helping students learn. If you can get past his haphazard teaching style, he is a great source of knowledge.

Brilliant Professor, but doesn't know how to teach. He is helpful to certain number of students. He only helps the ones he likes. He helps outside of the classroom but if you are not in his favorite list, he will try to get rid of A.S.A.P. If you have interest in math and want to use teacher as another resource, then it is fine else don't take it.

Prof. Joyce is very, VERY knowledgeable about math. He teaches what he knows, not what the dept wants him to. He can be hard to follow sometimes with his explanations, but ask for clarification and the issue usually clears up. btw, don't bother getting the textbook, he only references it and doesn't take homework.

I have him for Math 163 and he's a genius at it. He grabs problems from the text and goes over them and explains things in detail (if you ask). He gives practice exams before the real thing and even lets the class decide when to take the exam. He also curves grades and allows you to attend his other math classes to learn more about a topic covered.
