first: this class is all folk music, despite the title name. winkler is an engaging professor - his lectures are entertaining, interesting, and he makes the mandatory attendance worthwhile. the tests and quizzes are HARD. you really need to study, listen to the music, and do the readings.

The teacher is definitely dedicated to the subject. That said, this class is HARD. Lots of reading, there are questions on his tests about throwaway quotes in his slideshows, and the first essay is very difficult for people with little music experience. Take another class if you're not good with music, but if you are, give it a shot.

Probably harder than my major, and a ridiculous amount of work. He is a nice guy, and very passionate about his job, but he expects WAY too much, even for a 300 level. The only good thing is that he curves (b/c he knows his tests are ridiculously hard). Very critical on papers though, even if he gives you an A (like me)!I don't recommend him.

I've had Winkler for Jazz and Music technology. VERRRY fair in both classes. helps to have a backround in the class, i didn't have to do all the reading as i knew much of the material already. excited for 2 more classes with him in the fall!

I bet he is the worst professor I have ever met at stony brook. He is so mean. He is only crazy about Jazz in our class. I liked Jazz, however, he made people hate jazz music.

This guy manages to make jazz harder than chemistry. He really takes the fun out of music, and takes the subject WAY too serious. A lot of reading, ridiculously hard listening quizes/exams and 2 papers. Avoid this professor, take mus 312 instead.

Class was interesting, if you like folk music, take 320 with Winkler. Lot of reading and listening, but only 2 quizzes, 2 papers, midterm and final (mult. choice). He is a nice guy and also the easiest grader I've ever had, curved to a B. On the midterm, avg was 50% so that was a B, and so a C was around 30%. lol ridiculous
