Phel is an excellent professor and wonderful human being. He truly cares about helping out his students and is really open to what you want to explore in his class. It's sad that he is retiring this year (2010-11), but if you can, definitely take a class for the WI 11 or SP 11 quarters. You won't regret it!

Phel is really nice and super chill. He definitely cares about his students and gives good advice about your projects if you ask him for it. Class was pretty easy with redo possibilities if you mess it up on the first time around. Great prof!

Took Phel's classes back in late '80s at UCSD. Great prof, related well to students. I was a QEDS (econ) major in a class full of artists. My stuff sucked by comparison from an artistic standpoint, but Phel always gave good constructive advice. Still remember one of his quotes from lecture 20yrs ago: "you don't know what you don't know."

lectures are pointless but mandatory. you don't talk about anything but he always lets you out early. u make one project and show your progress now and then. unclear what he wants really with authenticity. kind of a harsh grader. is based on what he thinks is good like all vis classes.

Phel is just flat out a good person. He has years of experience and will really go out of his way to help in a technical way. He's critical but sensitive to the fact that we're young and learning. I have tons of respect for Phel.

I LOVED PHEL. definitely my favorite art prof at UCSD. an artist with practical knowledge of the photo business, and a knack for sharing it in a relateable way. technical perfectionist, demands high standards in concept and execution. good guy.

Cares about his students and very honest about just about anything. Teaches a lot of technical skills in photography (something skimmed over with most Vis Art classes here). Lectures are interesting and he's a swell guy.
