Fantastic but tough teacher. Hilarious, charismatic, and endearing - but don't take that to mean he's a pushover. Douglas is what I think of when I hear 'tough but fair'. If you want to coast through, stay away. If you want to learn - take this guy.

Ray Douglas is intense and will challenge you--not because he wants to prove you wrong, but because he wants to hear you defend your statement; he wants you to form your own opinion and be educated about it. In office hours, he's a godsend and even rode his bike up during a blizzard so people could talk to him about their papers. Would take again.

Although this class was a consistent pain in the ass, it was also a class that I enjoyed going to every single day. He gives a lot of work, but he's a great professor and a really cool guy as well. This was one of the best classes I've taken at 'gate and even though I never wanted to take this class in the first place, I'd now take it again.

Prof. Douglas is by far one the hardest professors I've ever had-- but he's also super intelligent and worth taking a class with. He expects a lot from his students but I can't really hate him for it because he's just such a cool guy.

Ray Douglas is perfect. I've never had a better teacher in my entire life - assuredly, I won't, either, ever again. His course was intellectually demanding, intuitionally challenging, and delivered with the precise articulation of a master in his field of study. He taught me history, he taught me life. Take a class with him.

The Princeton Review says he's one of the 300 best professors in America. I can see why. Demanding but brilliant. Don't take him if yuu're not willing to work harder than you ever have in your entire life.

Douglas is my thesis adviser and the only word to describe him is Amazing. The man is brilliant; he knows what I am trying to say before I do and he is always willing to help out. He will call you out when you are wrong (and if you're wrong, he will know) but he is also very understanding and non-judgmental. I couldn't be happier with my choice.

Class was early but worth every single second of sleep I gave up to be there. He is clear, hilarious, and always willing to listen to you and help. He brings his emotions and experiences to class like nobody I've ever seen before, making the learning environment stronger than any I've ever had. A gem who should be required for all history students.

Wonderful and rigorous class. Douglas expects a lot from his students. Doing the reading is necessary and class participation is important. He is an amazing professor who has a wealth of knowledge that he shares eloquently. He reads over drafts and gives great feedback. His class is not easy, but very rewarding in the end. Highly recommended.

I have never been more humbled or respected a teacher more in my total 16 years of education. He is brilliant, crystal clear, hilarious, and just an overall wonderful person. When you come to college, you want to learn from professors like Ray Douglas. I'm not kidding when I say I wish I could take everything he's every offered. Don't miss out.

One of the best professors I have ever had. You will have to work hard to get an A. That aside, he is hilarious, super smart and extremely helpful. He actually can make early, lecture-heavy classes enjoyable. The kind of professor who stands out from the rest.

It has been an honor to know this man. His intelligence will humble anyone, but he doesn't flaunt it. Wonderful sense of humor. Knows just about everything in the world. Not an easy professor but if you care about the class and meet with him often he will do everything he can to help you out. I wish he could teach all of my classes.

Absolutely genius. This man is one of the most brilliant individuals I've ever had the fortune of meeting. His lectures are interesting and very informative, and his grading is very fair. If you visit him during office hours, he's an amazing help (even if it's for a class he doesn't teach).

Hilarious. Very fair grader, wants you to understand concepts and be able to bring in some details on tests and papers. Discussion classes Fridays, speak up and he loves you. Midterm, final, short paper, long paper. Decent amount of reading, but he will lecture(very quickly) straight from it in a little less detail, so you can get by with scanning.

Fantastic professor. Assigns a lot of reading, but if you keep on top of it, he will notice and will like you more. Lectures are very interesting, and explain readings well. Discussions are thought-provoking, and papers were reasonable. Very helpful in office hours. Take a course with him! He's excellent.

Entertaining lectures and pretty helpful if you see him in office hours. Just be prepared to listen carefully and take good notes! Tough overall, but worth taking because you will learn a lot. He's not an impossible grader. Douglas might know the subject matter than some of the local British historians who taught us in London alongside him.

hhuugggeee lecturer, but has a great sense of humor, which is good b/c the material had the potential to be deathly boring (mod. gr. brit). empahsizes class participation, but i spoke once all semester and still got a b+. have to attend class or have a buddy in it who takes good notes if you want to do well on tests, but reading isnt necessary.

Interesting class and a good teacher. He gives interesting lectures and is available for extra help. Take good notes during class. The readings are too lengthy to complete. However they're not necessary. Only 4 assessments.
