Took this class Spring 2013, and enjoyed it greatly! Prof. Shackelford is a little quirky, but just be respectful, pay attention, and participate. Like another commenter said, make sure she knows your name! Also I'm pretty sure a large part of your grade depends on your participation and thoughtful answers to questions in class. I learned a lot!

I learned so much in this class! Shackleford really made me think about the world and my own personal views of the world. My presentation was towards the end of the semester so we ran out of days in the class. She just told me to turn in my outline and a got an A! Make sure to speak up so she knows your name!

Take everything you hear about her with a grain of salt. She is difficult at the beginning of the semester, but she softens. If you actually talk to her, she is a lovely woman-- one of my favorite professors. Do the readings, participate in class, and think about what you say/write.

The first day of class she walked in and was extremely rude to the teacher still in the classroom (what are you doing in MY room?). She says that she is hard to chase out the students who don't want to be there, but it was terrifying. do the reading, she will quiz you if the class isn't participating. easy grader, fairly nice after first week

This woman is the most uptight person you will ever meet. Refuses to see anyone's problems but her own. Go to class and DON'T be late, or she will shut the door in your face. Don't click your pen in class, don't talk in class, don't whisper in class, don't text, sit up straight, DON'T say "yup" to her...that's a start of her list of rules.

She definitely wanted her students to be introduced to new ideas in this course. Make sure you go to class! You can only miss a couple of days without her dropping a letter grade. If you don't read she will call you out and (it happened in my class) she will kick whoever didn't read out.

Doesn't accept emails. Takes six weeks to return papers to class of 20 despite only teaching two days a week. No feedback or grade explanation on assignments when she finally hands them back. Thinks 30% of students drop in first week because of the expected workload difficulty, but it has more to do with her. Nice person outside class, bad prof.

Dr. Shackelford is a very challenging professor, but it pays off. She is quite hard the first couple weeks of class so people who don't want to discuss will drop out. Do the readings and keep an open mind.

She really challenges you, make sure you do the readings, very helpful but you need to be proactive in her class, if you have a problem or question, just talk to her and she'll help you. Very nice woman, and very funny. She's very dynamic and keeps you on your toes. Awesome class.

She definitely has her opinions and her favorites in class but I enjoyed the class nonetheless. By the end it was pretty redundant but overall the class was enjoyable and I read some really interesting texts. Don't take the class unless you're ready to discuss - she WILL call you out.
