Professor Allen is awesome. His class wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but boy did I enjoy it. He has this very funny awkward sense of humor and is so so nice. Wish he taught more film classes!

Mr. Allen is amazing person and he is super passionate about the subject. His lectures can be a bit confusing but if you ask him to clarify, you'll be fine. For the most part, the films screened are interesting. He doesn't take attendance but if you don't go you won't do well because so many quiz questions are from class discussion.

Professor Allen is the best. Super friendly and approachable, funny, and easily accessible outside of class. Definitely read the books before the tests, but they're only over the textbook and what he talks about in class. Pay attention and participate, and he will give you a percent extra credit. Also super fast with grading, up in less than a day.

Comment:

Allen is a great professor, definitely one of the best in the FTDM department. Aesthetics was so enjoyable, and you could tell he really was passionate about what he was teaching. Weekly labs, quizzes about lectures and readings every other week, a midterm, a final, and one paper is the work, but it is very manageable. Take Allen!

Professor Allen is very witty, kind and his classes are entertaining. If you attend class, his quizzes and tests are easy. Though he doesn't grade attendance, it is hard to do well if you don't show up. I genuinely enjoyed his lectures.

Allen was an all around good teacher. He specifies exactly what will be on every exam, but he it's easy to miss things if you don't pay attention. The films we watched were (for the most part) interesting, and I learned a lot in his class. I definitely recommend taking his class, but attendance and paying attention are key.

If you want someone who will truly prepare you for the realities of the film and TV industry, take Professor Allen. He has a great personality and is easy going, but he also is quite observant and knows which students truly want to work in show biz. He'll go out of his way for those students to have them prepared. Terrific mentor and professor!

TV Aesthetics is such a great class! It is probably one of my favorite classes I have taken at TCU. Professor Allen is so funny and always makes going to class enjoyable. The grade is made up of tests and quizzes, but they are very easy if you go to class, listen to lecture and watch the films. Easy A, definitely worth taking with Professor Allen!

TCU is lucky to have him. He goes above and beyond just teaching you textbook material, but prepares you for the realities of the Film/TV industry. If you show your passion and dedication to this field by participating in labs and attending FTDM extra curricular events (which he often gives extra credit for), you will earn his respect and an A.

Allen's 'TV Studies for Non-Majors' class is one of the best at TCU! I took the class in the June-mester for Humanities credit and it was awesome. You have to go to class but all you do is watch tv shows. In between shows, he has funny anecdotes. He has won 2 Emmy's and is a great professor! Take his class if you get a chance. Usually a wait list.

Professor Allen is a great teacher. He has a great sense of humor and knows his stuff. He is an Emmy Award winning writer so listens to what he tells you if you are interested in writing. This class does have a 4hr. lab, which usually goes by quick b/c all you do is watch movies and talk about them. Take it with Allen if you can.

Richard Allen is one professor who is hard to read. In class he is an okay professor. He isn't terrible or terrific, but does just fine. He is an award-winning writer, so he has talent. However, he is very condesending and two-faced. He is very judging and makes verdicts about students very early in their college careers. Watch out for that.

ignore all negative comments below. he is the most helpful teacher in the entire radio tv film department. for reviews for tests, he practically gives you the test. there is nothing anti-student about him and he is a great and fun teacher. i love all of his classes.

Be very careful with Richard Allen. As a teacher he is nothing special, not bad but certainly not great. The problem is he is the department chair of a department that is very anti-student. He is in the position to do something about this but he does not. If you kiss up to him you will be fine, if not do not expect anything from him.
