Took bible as lit, hands down best class I've taken at UF so far. Two exams that are ids and essays and one paper (or two smaller papers) that you pick your own topic. He is partially retired and doesn't teach many classes anymore, so if you get a chance definitely take him.

He's a great teacer; very engaging. He clearly has a love for the subject he's teaching (I'm taking Bible as Literature). It's a fairly easy course, the assignments are straightforward and he's a fairly easy grader; just pay attention in class and to the readings and you should be fine.

I agree with the person below. Bible as lit is not supposed to be religious it is supposedly to be scholarly. Bramtley has a passion for what he does that is so rarely seen in professors today. He is also incredibly knowlegdable in opera (we had a moment of silence when Pavorotti died). He is supposed to be retiring soon so take him soon.

If you're a Christian, be prepared to defend your faith. If you're not, don't take what he says too seriously. He only represents the negative interpretation of scripture, and often misreads what is actually being said in the Bible. I found that he was more interested in what the "scholars" had to say versus what God is actually saying.

Loved him. Only 2 exams-midterm and a final, which consist of quote id's and an essay (he tells you to prepare your essay beforehand) and 2 papers. Attendance is mandatory. Fair grader, great reading voice, and infectious enthusiasm. Planning on taking him again for bible lit & emily dickinson.

If you aren't overly fond of poetry, I don't recommend this teacher. I took his class as a freshman, which was a huge mistake. I have never been so bored in my whole life. As I look back now, two years later, I don't remember a thing I learned. His classes are managable, but very very boring. I wanted to gouge my eyes out most of the time.

I've taken two classes by him, and loved every minute of each. He is fun, nice, passionate, knowledgeable, and has an infectious enthusiasm. His tests can be difficult if you donĂ¢€™t study or canĂ¢€™t write, but are easy enough otherwise. Don't graduate without taking at least one of his classes; especially ENG 3374 - Bible as Lit.

He is a "nice" guy and I could see how people might want him as their "grandpa", but at the end of class, did you understand anything of what he was talking about? The man spoke in riddles, and spent ten sylibles where three might have been sufficient. His ego seemed to be an extra TA and he spoke as if giving a soliloquey, I counted the minutes.

Brantley really knows his stuff and makes it interesting but I suggest only taking it if you have a strong interest in poetry. The only grades are two papers and midterm and final. They are manageable.

Professor Brantley is FANTASTIC! He's so cute and funny and interesting and.. o.o He makes classes fascinating, is very honest, cares about his students, loves his subject... take him or die! Also, I write poetry and asked him if he would be willing to look at my work and critique it and he agreed and did a very insightful job! I <3 him!

18 yrs ago he climbed on a desk to recite a poem about a lark. He gave me a nickel for a Diet Coke b/c I figured out that a poem was about a rooster. He healed the wounds I sustained in an abusive 12th grade English class. He made me love poetry I'd always hated & he made me believe I could write.
