Don't let him scare you away too quickly. He is tough, especially at the beginning, but he is such a caring and knowledgeable man. He really knows how to teach aural skills in an effective way. Whatever you do, don't pull your phone out in his class, or he will yell at you. His class will effectively prepare you for the higher level aural skills.

Dr. Hoffman is an amazing teacher, and it's great that I feel like I can ask him questions, even if they've already been covered, and not feel stupid for asking. Don't show up late, because he deserves all your time, and listen to everything he has to say! He has great advice, cool stories, and plays the recorder amazingly. Take his classes!

Dr. Hoffman is brilliant and knows everything there is to know about music theory. However, I don't find him to be one of the most caring teachers and I found it hard to create any kind of relationship with him even though I did well in his class. I don't feel like I'd be able to approach him that I'm not in his class anymore.

Dr. Hoffman is a great teacher. He expects you to know the things you learned in your previous theory class well. He DOES NOT like when you write key signature memorizing strategies on test/quiz papers he believes you should already know it and it should be second nature. DO NOT show up late for a test or pop quiz you won't receive extra time.

Dr. Hoffman is a great teacher. Probably one of the best in the music department. However, be ready for hard grading. He expects a lot out of you so you cannot slack off in this class!

Incredibly smart guy, knows pretty much everything there is to know about theory. He's really understanding, too, and can explain things very well if you have a question. Keeps it interesting and his love for the subject is apparent, making it much easier to enjoy the class. Whatever you do, though, don't be on your phone.

Dr. Hoffman is probably knows the most about Music Theory than anyone else in the world. Unfortunately he doesn't realize not everyone is as smart as him and does not understand completely the first time. He's very fast-paced also. He also throws tantrums sometimes. He screamed at a kid for getting an answer wrong on his HW. Funny guy though

I LOVE Dr. Hoffman. He explains things really well and will absolutely be there for you if you ever have any questions or need extra help. He's also a very sweet guy and will go the extra mile to make sure you're doing well inside and outside of the classroom. I highly highly recommend him.

This guy knows what he is talking about. He is a really great teacher. He is a little bit scary when he gets angry, so do your homework and don't forget your textbooks. Otherwise, a great teacher.

Do not buy the textbook, you will never use it. This is a great class and Hoff is extremely helpful and clear. If you take this course with him, CARE about the material and you will gain so much more than if you had just gone into it to get by. You can tell he really enjoys teaching this course and he was a great teacher to have

Best theory class I have had at Belmont, as well as one of THE MOST insightful teachers in the entire school of music. Brilliant man who wants students to think outside of the box and discover things previously disregarded. Please do not take Hoffman if you are just going to dumb down the class (i.e. commercial voice/musical theatre majors)

Hoff really knew what he was talking about. Nice guy, but if you didn't care about his class he didn't care about you. His nice side though, invited people over to have Thanksgiving at his house if they were staying in Nashville over break. Class wasn't too hard, just go to as many as you can and pay attention, then should be an easy A.

Dr. Hoffman truly loves teaching. He is a brilliant man, and a great teacher! I didnt like the class at first, but once you get used to his teaching style everything starts clicking. Dr. Hoffman truly has a concern for the students, and wants them to do well, but he fully expects YOU to do YOUR part. You will work for your grade, but it is worth it.

i hate atonal music and i don't understand why he thinks it's awesome. One day he said "if music theory isn't the #1 most important thing in your life, you should reconsider your decision to be a music major!" seriously! that has to be the most ridiculous comment i've ever heard!

Dr. Hoffman is the best music teacher at Belmont... IF you are not a schmuck and want to learn. If you are truly interested in Music Theory, you will never find a better teacher. If you just want to be a singer and don't appreciate the academics of music, find someone else so you don't dumb down the class.

Theory 4 has probably been my favorite class so far because of Dr. Hoffman. It's not an insanely easy class, but he makes it interesting and explains things well. The course was fun, and I've NEVER had fun in theory until his class. If at all possible,

I've had Dr. Hoffman for quite a few classes, and I think he's a great teacher, except that he's kinda mean to incoming Prep students. He also doesn't have much patience sometimes. However, he's nice. He doesn't look me in the eye in the hall, though, and he ignores me when I say hi sometimes....
