Comment:

Along with being the Concord campus president, he is an excellent teacher. The tests (midterm and final) are based off of his lectures. Don't buy the book (he doesn't even encourage it). Third part of the grade is an 8 page paper about your family (easy). Flexible office hours and wants to know you personally. I would take him again!!

Comment:

Professor Phelps was a great teacher. It is VITAL to attend all classes. I don't even think I purchased the text for this class as all midterms were based heavily on the lectures. If you pay attention and take good notes you will learn a lot and get an A. I highly recommend Prof. Phelps and wish there were more professor's like him!

I'm not a history major but this was by far my favorite class. Interesting lectures, and good use of movie clips and stories. You will learn a lot. There was one paper, and tests are all essay, so you have to study, but it's not hard.

Warning to people who do not like to memorize: Phelps classes consist of basically memorizing his lectures word for word and reciting them back to him in essays for the midterm and final. I object to this kind of teaching philosophy and therefore disliked Phelps. Also he is smug. Just saying. Class was a hard A/easy B (granted that you study).

Phelps is great--he teaches history as if he were telling an interesting story. He helps to organize your note-taking and gives clear and accurate review for the final. Best history class I've taken--I even took him again later!

If you ever wanted to now what it was like taking a class at Harvard or Yale, this is where you need to start. This is the best teacher that I have EVER had. Not easy, but you learn things that you think about everyday.
