I had Shaffer for Uni 101 and if you could in anyway avoid having him please do. We learned absolutely nothing but how much he loves The New York Times, and he doesnt care if you have a medical issue that keeps you from class. I wouldve gotten an A based on my grades but he gave me a C+ due to missing because of my illness.

Shaffer definitely isn't my favorite professor. He gave us lots of work for University 101, which in my mind shouldn't be consuming that much of my time. He gives a lot of reading as homework and had us read a book in a week lol. Def isn't satan like some of these reviews make him seem, but probs don't take his class if you have other choices.

I feel like this class offers nothing besides reading articles and discussing. The class, in my opinion, is redundant and could be expanded onto possibly more useful topics (i.e career prep, handling transitions from high school to adulthood, resume writing)

DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS PROFESSOR! HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH! ALL WE DO IS READ NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLES AND TALK ABOUT THEM IN CLASS IT IS RIDICULOUS. ALSO HE IS VERY CONDESCENDING AND PRETENDS LIKE HE IS OPEN BUT ALSO HE ACTUALLY ISN'T. WHATEVER YOU DO, IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER OPTIONS D O N O T TAKE CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR.

try your best not to have this professor and you will like college a lot more!!! He is used to teaching history majors so he doesn't explain things well at all. I couldn't even finish the class I had to drop out along with 6 others from the class.

Shaffer is so knowledgeable about his subject and is very helpful if you just ask him for help! He does get a little allover the place with his lectures sometimes and there is alot of reading and that's probably why some people don't like him. His tests and papers aren't hard as long as you put SOME effort into them. I highly recommend him though!

Short readings of 10 pgs due for each class period, helps for participation. Seemed to find no correlation between doing the readings and doing well on quizzes/tests (I didnt read and felt confident on most quizzes, but had friends who read and failed). Not much homework outside of readings and papers

Friendly, and passionate about his subject. But not overly helpful. He grades hard, but fair. A lot of work, and we used 15 books and had to read one each week, as well as write a paper.Very challenging. He speaks quietly and is sometimes hard to understand, especially since I did not know much about the subject. But,it was his first time teaching.

Worst ever. Cold-hearted. Impossible to get above a C if you don't take his word for gospel.

I dont know what these people are talking about. Shaffer is the smartest and kindest profs who talks about more relevant things than most. Just because these people were clearly unable to handle his heavy workload b/c of sheer laziness, didnt agree with him (although he always gives balanced opinions and encourages discussion), or were incapable of synthesizing information because the info wasnt spoonfed to them doesnt make Shaf a bad prof, it makes them bad students. Do the right thing, take shaffer!!!!!!!

Should just stay locked in his hovel he calls an office and not teach. He is late for everything Might have the book smarts but little to no tact. Arrogant & short tempered. Might have PHD, though didn't when teaching me; never made correction(arrogance)
