He encouraged discussions in his class by having students fill out "idea cards" on the assigned reading, and then asked people to comment on their ideas during class. A good way to get everyone involved. You couldn't just sit silently through one of his classes, or get away with not doing the reading, which I liked about him. He was also my advisor and very helpful to me.
