Professor Garrett, while a fine musician, really takes a hit when it comes to interpersonal skills. He can often be rude, unyielding, and insensitive. Being a good teacher means knowing how to reach your students and adapt your teaching to help them succeed. He doesn't do this and it has led to a decline in his studio. Majority of students drop.

Mr. Garrett is an egotistical chauvinist. His rehearsals are far from productive, he constantly puts down students, and he has been the cause of multiple transfers and changes of major. He knows little to nothing about teaching, and loves to belittle people and any dissenting opinions.

He is a model for what I to be as a educator. Great musician, cares for his students. Do need a tough skin for his class overall, and makes fun of me a lot. He does know that I can take it. Can be moody and opinionated, and has some funky class policies (wont meet with you if you miss class) but otherwise a great guy, conductor, and teacher.

Mr. Garrett is an incredibly talented man. He is a great conductor with a lot to teach. The disconnect is with his people skills. His demeanor, attitude, and approach during my lessons are exactly what I've needed to be a better musician. All of the other stuff people complain about him for I just consider to be his own weird quirks. I really don't care -- he's a good teacher for me.

While I understand that many students take personal issue with this man, i think it is unfounded. Take the time to get to know him. If you are a jerk to him then of course he isn't going to treat you the way you would like. I think he is hilarious and on top of that a very good musician. He is encouraging but honest. If you suck he will tell you.

I think a lot of people misjudge Garrett. He's really a great professor and has a great sense of humor. He expects a lot of his students which is appropriate at the college level. He's a talented conductor and an amazing musician. Take the time to get to know him before you judge him please!

Where do I start? This man is extremely insensitive and an arrogant jerk. He tells these stupid stories, wastes all your time, then keeps you over the rehearsal time EVERY rehearsal. Aside from his personal ickiness, he sucks as a conductor. Bah! Don't take a class from him unless you have to!
