This was a kind of specialized class. Almost no one was an English major but she got even the science people really reading the books and talking about them. We read fiction, memoirs, history, art, all sorts of stuff. It really illuminated what we were learning about. She was fair, funny, and really excited to have people bring in what they knew.

She was never really fast with getting grades back, so I didn't know until the very end how I was doing. Stay on top of her for test scores!!!! And your overall grade, try and track it yourself. Overall I give her a 1/5.

She's really great in helping students with their papers, and she fosters a very relaxed class atmosphere. The questions she asks in class can be over your head and silence-inducing, but they make you think.

Really good, kind teacher, with a strong grasp of her subject. The only fault I can find is that... sometimes she's boring. If you're not in a lively class, expect to sit in long silences, since she never seems to know how to start people talking. Some of her texts are dull throughout, and you can expect absolutely huge chunks of them due every day

As far as I know, Feingold is the only professor who actually teaches the literary trends of the 20th century in 283; everyone else just teaches their favorite books. However, I didn't feel that she chose the best texts to represent postmodernism.

Wonderful supportive atmostphere, and a really good selection of novels. She made it clear she valued everyone's opinion, and encouraged good discussion. Only downside: one huge paper at the end of the term. Hard to know what grade you're getting. Still, a great class.

Ruth is a really nice lady, yet she is very judgemental. You are graded on participation in her discussion, but she cannot carry a discussion with the class very well. She expects too much from intro level students, thus her grading is not fair. She takes you to DC to see a play (It is mandatory).

Okay class but extremely judgemental and critical, especially for a literature/poetry teacher. Doesn't foster good discussion, often put the students down, and expects too much from intro level students, for example going to D.C., etc.

INTRO to lit...usually this would mean that a teacher is some what understanding if you are NOT an English wiz, Ruth was a really harsh grader and super boring. The class activities do not go beyond her talking and it gets old quick. Not a great intro class.

Incredibly nice: she's always willing to sit down and talk to you about your papers, the books, whatever. And she gives really good suggestions about what you can do to make your work better. There's a lot of reading, but most of it's pretty interesting, as long as you like 20th century lit.

Well, as far as lit. she is really really boring. Grades very hard and is rather harsh with her comments on papers that seem not as far as "well you could fix this..." but more along the lines of " you do not write well, this is too sloopy for me too continue reading..."

I liked her until, one day she said a comment in front of the class about one of my papers really loudly (that we were still sprucing up and working on) which was really wrong and she should have talked to me privately. She continuously apologized, but I didn't appreciate that or expect that. I just hope that she hasn't done that to anyone else.

I don't know how anyone could say anything bad about Feingold. She's so nice and down to earth. She is a tough grader, but not unfair at all. She's one of my favorite professors here. I'd recommend her to anyone. Her classes are fun and she's very knowledgable

Do you complain about a math teacher thinking he's right? For what it's worth, I found Feingold to be respectful of students' ideas. But in any case, she's really smart, and knows what she's talking about. Listen, instead of getting in a snit about not being told you're right, and you may learn.

Ruth is Awesome, she is a kindred spirit in the English department. You don't have to agree with her, you just have to support your ideas. I should know, I have taken more classes with her than any other student at smp.

She definitely has her passions which she brings into her class, and expects good discussions on the books. She really opened my eyes, and got pizza for my class when our exam ran late!!!:)Tough paper grader though, no BS with her.

She knows her own mind, but I've had her for two classes, and anyone who's paying attention can tell she's excited about students expressing their ideas, even if she disagrees with them. She likes you to think. Scrupulously fair when it comes to grading.

I almost did not become an English major because of her class. Completely focused on feminist approaches and would not see lit in any other light. You'll get along fine if you agree with her philosophies, but otherwise stay away.
