Comment:

Setsuko Buckley is a very nice person, and tries really hard. But if you have any learning disability or something that hinder your ability in class, do not take this class unless you are ready to fail. There is a language barrier too if you need to ask questions, use email. You will need tutor. Studied 4 hrs a day, still failed. Taking it again.

Worst professor I've ever had. I have tried to reach out for help time and time again to no avail. I would ask questions in class and she would just laugh and move on to the next student. Even when you study what she teaches, she will put information on the quizzes that she has never taught in class. Don't take this class if you don't have to.

Worst class I've ever taken. I studied everyday for this class and would get C's on the test. I even had a Japanese tutor. She has unrealistic expectations for an introductory class. I felt upset and stressed out most of the quarter. Most of the students in my class skipped or dropped out. I would NOT recommend taking any of her classes.

Along with a very thick language barrier, the tests are very difficult as her grading system isn't specific. You get docked on points you didn't know you had to include. The class average for the first test was 44.84/70 which is a 64%, the highest score was 54/70 which is a 77% If you are taking this class, I would recommend after-class time.

Comment:

Buckley-Sensai is a sweet lady, and very much loves teaching her mother tongue. She's a tough grader, and is aware of modern usage but doesn't teach it, sticks with traditional style. She's fair though, and the classroom atmosphere is filled with positivity and usually laughs! Gives help if you need it, & answers ANY questions related to Japanese!

She is a great teacher, she talks very quietly though, and has a heavy accent. I would recommend sitting at the front of the class. If you attend every class and do all the homework, the class is fun and you'll learn a lot. ??????

She is very nice and she does try to help as much as she can but there is a language barrier with her. Her Japanese class is very hard and fast paced so don't take it unless you are really dedicated to the subject.

This class has been the most awkward, frustrating, and boring class I have ever taken. Her expectations are unclear, she lectures directly from the book, the tests are confusing and difficult (our class average for the quarter is 68%)... avoid this class if at all possible, for the sake of your sanity and GPA.

Sensei Buckley is one of the best Japanese teachers I have ever been taught by. I am shocked at the comments made by other students. So many American students are not as disciplined as the Japanese and I am positive that their negative comments are due to their lack of commitment to the study of Japanese language. This is not an Anime class!

Buckley Sensei is a nice woman but she is not a good teacher. Her biggest flaw is communication. She doesn't speak English very clearly and does not communicate her expectations very well. Her tests are tricky. I was very frustrated with her throughout the class.

Teaches straight from the textbook, and is unable to elaborate or answer any questions without referencing the text. Grading was ridiculous -- your final grade is dependent on how well others in the class perform. If you're not interested in linguistics, don't take the class from Buckley.

I love languages and thought this was going to be an incredible class. S. Buckley is a nice person but she is completely incomprehensible when speaking in front of the class and doesn't always know what she's talking about. Her quizes and tests are extremely difficult and she can't always answer questions that are asked in class. Don't take this

This is a hard class and it all depends on how much you study, this is a new language it does not come that quickly, but Buckley Sensei is very sweet and includes everyone in exercises. I was surprised how much I have learned. But she says if you want to become good at Japanese you also need to study more than just the book outside of class :)

Horrible prof. She can't teach without the book in front of her and can't answer your questions because I'm pretty sure she has only a faint grasp on the use of modern english. Doesn't always grade fairly, is unhelpful and confusing. Don't take this class unless you feel like gambling with your GPA.

I would not recommend this teacher to anyone!!! She is a horrible teacher. It is hard to understand what she is saying half the time, she needs to learn to speak better English if she is going to teach an ANTH class. She might not be as horrible a teach in JAP Classes but for my ANTH class she was awful. She is no doubt the worst teacher at Whatcom

I took this class last year & dropped out due to the same reasons people are posting, especially the book. This quarter I tried her again and she changed her text book & teaching a bit and the class has been great! She's still hard to understand but the text book makes up for that & she tries harder to let the class know what homework is due.
