I earn every grade I receive. However, in this class I think I earned a higher grade than I received. I would take this class with another professor if possible. She did give a very moving speech at the memorial service shortly after the shooting, and I respect her for that.

Dr. Givens is very agressive. She speaks harshly to the white males in the class. Clarity of subject matter is very limited. If you don't agree with her opinion your grade will show it

Make sure not to get sick ... at all ... ever ... while you have her. Even with a valid excuse from the hospital saying that you had bubonic plague (Signed by both your local senator and the Pope) she would never let you makeup any work or tests. She has a corncob shoved up her hiney and has no compassion for her students. Run away screaming!!!

Have had several classes with this professor. She is tough but have found her to be fair. She expects a lot from her students and expects them to be prepared. If you're not willing to work, don't take one of her classes. I've learned a lot and have the utmost respect for her.

This teacher is the epitome of the kind of professor that infects the education system of tenured colleagues. She dissmisses students questions, and talks down to students who are attempting to learn from her weak lectures. Her grading process is very unclear and inconsistent. Avoid, if at all possible.

Dr. Givens is a hard teacher to like. Her lectures are dated and if you have an opinion different from hers, you will be wrong. She doesn't tell you what she wants from you, and you're left to figure out most of the course work on your own. She expects too much from her students. She is VERY strict and not understanding at all. Avoid if possible

Dr. Givens is great at acting - for the first week or so, she seems interesting and fun. Don't be fooled!! She has a huge chip on her shoulder and if you do the slightest thing to annoy her, she will drop your grade (even if you are an A student). She throws tantrums frequently and if you catch her on a bad day, she will "bite your head off."

The higher the class level, the easier the class because they are just more interesting. Take Race, Class and Gender in Media if given the chance. I truly enjoyed our assignments and enjoyed her more when I was able to be involved in something that she really cared about and studied. She can be tough, but she will prepare you for Senior Seminar for sure!

I disagree with the previous rating. Dr. Givens has high expectations of her students. There's nothin wrong with that! The kid who wrote that last rating is pissed because he wasn;t prepared for class (along with the rest of the class), and she walked out on us. If you want a teacher who will treat you like a baby, she is not the one for you.

Horriffic teacher. She is very knowledgable about her subject area, but inexcusably thinks that everyone in her class should be just as knowledgable as her. She's prone to tantrums and fits when she finds anyone who doesn't fit her stereotypical image of a perfect student who yearns to be a social scientist. Simply a plague to the department.

Dr. Givens is a great teacher in making you actually work for what you learn. Her only problem is that in backing up her claims, she constantly referrs to "research", which is of course easily manipulated to fit the needs of those doing the researching. Otherwise a great teacher.
