Sophie McCall is an amazing lecturer. She really knows how to engage students and brings forward interesting discussion questions. Fair marker. Easy to talk to and always seems interested in helping students. Engl 357 had a great book list chosen by her.

She's a nice person but as a prof the class was disorganized. The lecture content was very superficial, never went in depth with analysis. Barely had to show up to class, just attend tutorials and you'll do fine. Presentation sign ups are on the first day, look into the books before hand for when you need to choose and defend one.

Enjoyed the class. Sophie is nice and reasonable. I didn't enjoy the group projects in tutorials - everyone gets the same grade and I'm just not a fan of group projects and presentations. It wasn't horrible but requires time outside of class to meet with group. Assigned small tasks in tutorials for the next week. Nice teacher but makes you work.

Sophie is a nice person, and goes easy with marking but is intimating sometimes when she doesn't agree with someone or something you're saying, which kind of seems like she is trying to intentionally make you look stupid. She has crazy eyes, but that doesn't bug me unless I look her right in the eye. Don't need to go to class pretty much ever.

Comment:
Sophie's class sounded interesting but wasn't really very well put together. Readings were irrelevant and it felt like the class got less organized as we went on. She seemed to have a superficial grasp of some of the readings and preferred her own interpretations over opposing ones. OTOH, she is friendly, intelligent, and challenges her students.

There were 2 essays and one presentation with short story readings each week so altogether it's not a lot of work. The marking is fair and go to your TA to discuss your thesis before you start. Sophie is very nice prof that tries though her lectures are boring.

Lectures felt very long for 50 minutes. Says 'um' all the time. Midterm was worth 2.5% and asked ridiculous questions. Two essays that don't generalise to other academic writing: a close reading of a paragraph and a compare-contrast paper, which might eventually be useful, but not when everything else is research essays. Wouldn't take her again.

Midterm was worth 5% & was such a waste of time. Reading and essays were fair. Essays marked pretty hard though, get your thesis and argument approved by TA and you'll likely do better on the essay. Sophie was cute, lectures weren't that bad although she was just talking about what we read. I would take a class with her again.

Comment:
Lectures are extremely boring and useless, she basically summarizes the stories you read. She cannot explain herself concisely so it's hard to understand what she's trying to say when it takes her 20 sentences to get it out. She seems helpful and kind, but it's always uncomfortable one on one. I wouldn't take a class with her again.

Comment:
Lectures are extremely useless and boring. Over 30 short stories to read in the class, and her midterm required you to remember extremely minor, unimportant details. She mostly talks about her own opinions of the stories during lectures; she's kind in person but can be intimidating one-on-one. Not helpful when it comes to teaching.

Happy to never take a class with her again. Lecture is a painful hour of listening to her opinion on boring short stories instead of teaching things that will actually benefit us. Workload is fair as are essays. Talk to your TA about your thesis statement for the essay before handing it in to make sure you do well. Sum: try to get a different prof

Papers are marked pretty hard. Sophie was nice though, she was cute and had good ideas about the readings. Stay on top of the readings and participate in tutorials lots. Midterm was only worth 5% Final was worth more though but not too bad. The amount of work was fair. Lectures were a bit boring.

Easiest class I ever took at SFU. Sophie's literature choices are not always the most interesting. Readings are required, but posts lecture notes online so attendance is only required if you want participation credit for in-class activities. Essay questions posted ahead of time and all multiple choice are from the textbook website

Don't expect this to be a walk in the park. Sophie is really helpful and clear in what she wants for papers, but this isn't high school English anymore.

Sophie is a very kind prof with interesting ideas. She sheds new light on many pieces of literature. Sometimes it's difficult to understand what she's looking for, but once understood, assignments are easy (and scarce!). Good class.

I like Sophie, she's got a good attitude and her lectures are pretty good. Her written assignments were pretty good. However, her final exam was a bit harder than I expected. Some of her book choices weren't to my liking but that's a matter of taste. Overall she's good.

Definately a fun course and prof. She makes the content interesting and really gets you to think about the material. Make sure you keep up with the readings as the course moves quite quickly through the material.

Sophie is great. She communicates her material effectively as well as chooses material that is interesting and engaging. She marks fairly, is understanding and lenient with extensions and is so friendly and approachable. She really is one of the best Eng. profs @ SFU. One piece of advice though: stay away from passive voice!
