If you need a Gen Ed--TAKE THIS. TRUST ME. Prof. Burton is the nicest guy. He is very easy going and funny. All you do is watch videos--so long as you take notes on the video, you are golden on the tests. You do have to go see a musical at the local dinner theater and write a paper about it, but he grades easily. Really--take this. He's great.

This class is the study of musicals. That is it. Very boring if that is not your thing. You sit & watch a documentary every class, take notes and HOPE that you took notes on the correct material. It is pretty random what your 4 tests are on. I would not recommend it.

He is funny, kinda cute. Has 4 exams, they get difficult as the semester progresses. No textbook. Have to study for exams to do well but has extra credit which can help your grade. I ended up with an A, just watch the music video in your free time, also have to go watch a play. Easy and nice prof, didnt show up for class one day, cancels class alot

music and society; possibly the easiest class i've taken. hopefully, you like broadway, or you'll be out of luck. his tests are insanely easy if you only go to the review, and he goes over everything in class about 3 times, even though the test material is black and white. great guy.

His music and society class taught me a lot- but not because of him, because of the movies. He doesn't teach, you just watch movies...which makes studying for the tests difficult. HE IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A HOLD OF, so don't bother trying. doesn't respond to important emails. interesting class, nice professor, but unhelpful.

Professor Burton was kind of confusing. There were five tests in the class and on the first one he said that style of the test would be similar to the other four. They were each completely different and sometimes extremely difficult. Sometimes class was very boring or spent watching a movie that was not very exciting. Over all boring class.

He isn't really bad at all. This class is a pretty easy A. You have to take a lot of notes and then memorize pretty much everything, but you also know exactly what's going to be on the test. If you can't get an A in this class, you should not be in college. Music he teaches is boring at first but then he plays beautiful pieces. He is funny, too!

This is the worst thing I have ever done to myself. I got suckered in by his not assigning a book, and I will never do that again. His lectures are SO boring. If you don't take good notes on EVERYTHING he says, the best you can hope for on the tests is a mid B. It's not bad, but B's in filler classes are NOT good.

waste of time....we had to go to the dinner theatre to watch him perform in bad shows. i don't think he should be teaching about musical theatre in this class...leave it to the theatre department....rude, cancelled class, wasted my time and my money...memorize and don't make him mad and you can sail by, especially if you are in Encore!

Memorization is key. You watch videos and take notes, then he'll go over the important stuff in the video and you can get notes from that too. Tests are mostly identify and short answer. Incredibly easy and the best way to get an A. He's always late, but he only cancelled class for us once, so I'm not sure about what these others are talking about.

I thought this class was going to be easy because there was no textbook. WRONG. His tests are pretty hard if you don't take good notes. He talks and writes so much you don't know what is important and what isn't. If you are looking for an easy class take Bartram.

Classes involve watching movies or discussing readings about musicals. It is basically clear from the lecture on what you need to know for the tests, which are easy. His laziness can be both good and bad. Take it as an easy gen ed and gpa maintainer. If you belong to UMW Encore/Showchoir, you'll get the benefit of the doubt on your paper

easy class. all about history of b'way, no text books. watch videos in class 2/3 of the time. great and easy way to get a gen ed or elective done. cancels class all the time for different reasons but no one in my class would complain! recomended!

Dr. Burton was pretty boring although he could be funny at times. Although I was interested in the class, his teaching method did not make anything stick. You do get to listen to classical music and it can be laid back, but it felt more like a waste of time than anything else.
