Steve loves teaching about jazz & big band and it shows, if you don't respect the music and play it wrong, he'll let you know! His ears are just the best, he hears everything. Jazz arranging class was really good too. I learned a lot from Steve! Playing in his Jazz bands prepared me to work with many national touring acts.

Steve is a fun guy to listen to. Attendance not required, but you should go because sometimes he invites friends to play for the class. Only downside is that its hard to know what to study for the tests because class is just unstructured ramblings and he doesn't give notes. No homework given, just 2 tests and a paper.

Steve is my hero! He started with an unfunded jazz band where students got no college credits for performing in it when I was a student at I.C. back in the early '70s. Now, he has a whole department and a separate degree program in jazz studies. Besides being a great jazz guitar player and a wonderful teacher, he created something out of nothing!

Steve is the most accessible professor I have ever had. He isn't easy, but knows what it takes to earn a living as a musician. This is part of his teaching and if you can't cut it in this class, you will starve in the real world.

I loved going to his class cause he'd just rant about jazz greats and let us listen to music. He's a really good guy and knows his****, but it's hard to follow at times. If you dig jazz, definitely a great course. the 2 tests were kind of hard but i loved it anyway.

Steve is not a ****. He's an accomplished ARTIST. Yes hes's a little strange at times, and maybe a bit moody, but he's not a weenie. Weenies do not name their sons Miles. A lot of artists were deemed JERKS by their peers- DaVinci, Vonnegut, etc. Don't be jealous of him; he wants you to learn.

Maybe not the most organized prof, but he means well and is definitely passionate about jazz. Very knowledgeable. He's also funny as hell, in his aging hep-cat kind of way.
