Comment:
professor Hijman is a good person and genuinely wishes well for his students, but the lectures and slides are very hard to follow. There are 4 quizzes, no midtrm and essay and a final. lots of reading for each quiz and you will always feel like there was something more you could have studied.

Good Prof. Textbook use not very important. Notes are essential in class. Explains a concept then gives examples.

Dr. Hijmans was really nice and knowledgeable, but his lectures were kind of confusing and it was not clear what material was important.

Easily one of the worst profs I've had. His lectures jump constantly between subjects and tangents, making the content nearly impossible to remember. He assigns chapters of the textbook with no relation to what's being talked about in class. If I hadn't taken art history classes in the same area before, I'd have no idea what's going on.

An excellent professor. Dr. Hijmans took the time to talk about the importance of a liberal arts education and what makes us human. His end of term project was also an excellent example of authentic assessment, and a fun way to bring together disparate elements in the class. A wonderful, fair marker, with clear criteria and a kind man.

He can be a very dry lecturer and often digresses from the topic which can make it difficult to follow and his PowerPoint notes are no help at all. However, if you pay attention in class and read the textbook and get a good idea of general concepts you should be good for the tests (he splits the midterm into 4 quizzes).

He means well, no doubt. My problem is that its an introductory course but instead of laying down a broad foundation he immediately expected you to understand very specific concepts. No midterm, 4 quizzes instead and a term paper/project. Grading is VERY unclear/subjective. A great person, good sense of humour, but would not take his class again.

Dr. Hijmans is a brilliant man, and seriously one of the sweetest professors I have ever had. He will drop a low mark on an exam to boost your grade, and even move the weight of a quiz to another exam if you've missed it. His notes are a little disorganized and confusing but if you go to class, you should be able to understand. Great professor!

Not a bad guy, but incredibly dull and odd lectures. He just skips from one tiny detail to another without ever giving you any context or explanation, so it just turns into a mess. If I hadn't taken previous courses in Roman History, I would have had no idea what was going on. Quizzes and test were simple, though.

He is very knowledgable about the subject. He is also very fair when it comes to quizzes; he offers rewrites & will drop a low quiz mark so that it doesn't effect your grade (assuming you have done well on the rest). It is sometimes difficult to follow his lectures, which only end up being a small part of the quizzes, but overall he is a good prof.

He was an ok prof...really dry lecturer but his quizzes were pretty easy. He also marked the writing assignments pretty easily (at least in my opinion). Halfway through the semester, though, he disappeared with some sickness :( Hope he's ok next sem =/

One of my new favorite profs. There were no trick questions or hidden expectations. If you attend class and do the readings, you will receive a very high grade. Also, Hijmans provided a fresh perspective that really gave me a brand new interest in history. Excellent!

Love this prof! Really knows his material and makes the subject matter interesting and engaging. The questions that he poses are interesting to think about. Take notes on the overall themes of the powerpoints then the exams are not a problem. Easy marker and super sweet! Cares about his students and wants you to succeed. Recommend 110%

As a science student, I found him incredibly hard to listen to during the lecture. This put me in a sleep esp. when I was tired. Also, he was not explicit on what was to be tested. The course itself, however, was interesting and he is willing to help. Textbook is a must! The lecture, overall, was a disappointment although course content was great

The most incredible teacher I have ever had in my entire university career. He teaches things that are on the fringe of his discipline and makes you feel passionate about the topic. He is the nicest prof, even though may come across awkward, and really helps his students. If you want a course or teacher to rock your world take any ofhis RomanArt

He was THE best Latin prof. He was very helpful and so good to talk to. Plus the pop quizzes were the best ever as they really pushed you to stay on top and I got a gorgeous mark for it. I love him!

Dr. Hijmans is an awful lecturer in Latin. I feel like i barely learned anything from him. He is fluent and a nice guy but it seemed as though he had a hard time conveying his knowledge properly. Also I HATED the pop quizzes about once a week
