I had Prof Schaar in 1995. I found myself quoting Prof Schaar today to my 16 year old daughter. His knowledge and his excitement about the Middle East was amazing. It was along time ago, but he really predicted much of the tragedy faced on both sides of Islamic/Zionist and Islamic/Western Culture well in advance them happening. Thank you Professo

Professor Schaar was an absolute asset in my education and provided the most enjoyable educational setting I experienced at Brooklyn College. He was excellent in succinctly presenting the core issues involved, and then opening it up for the class to discuss. Very open, sharp thinker, and a valuable breadth of knowledge and historical context.

I had him for an advanced history course on the situation in the middle east; this was in 1982. He has been on my mind a lot lately because this man predicated many of the things that have actually come to pass. He said then there would be a war for oil there in 20 years, and so it was. Smart man.

He was nice, however very unclear. gave us 2 weeks to do a research paper and it took him a week to approve the topic...you do the math. He repeated himself very often and tended to rant and ramble onto topics which we already did, or onto topics which had no bearing in the class. If its an elective hes ok, if you want to learn, dont bother.

I currently hold a Master's in History from Brooklyn College. I had Prof Schaar as an undergrad and could not drop his class fast enough. In fact, it was because of him that I left for NYU and only returned as a graduate student because he left. Even his colleagues find him to be terrible (I have personally heard this from three professors). Bye!!!

Schaar is very good but PERFECTION is too much. His knowledge and command of the subject is outstanding but he is still exceptionally boring and after all the times he stepped on me, I could not wait for the semester to finish. Nevertheless, I'll miss the enthusiasm and dedication he showed for the subject but not the raindrops off my paper.

The man is indeed filled with ardor and is inspirational, but some of these comments grossly exaggerate his qualities. I still consider him to be tremendously boring at times--most of the time--but it is not often we see someone with such determination and love for what he does. We bid you an honorable fare well.

Unlike my counterpart below, Professor Schaar has a passion for his profession. He is zealous, straightforward and has an incomparable command of the global history. He goes beyond the typical professors by implementing the use of documents by his students to facilitate them to draw their own conclusions about events.

He is exceptionally boring. I constantly look over my right shoulder to see if the clock is working properly. Sitting in the front row, I should have brought an umbrella to class (inside joke). Nonetheless, he is erudite and makes the class appreciably easier than it should be. No reason whatsoever to receive under A-.

Fascinating and passionate professor. Very nice inside and outside of class. Those of us who have strong feelings on either side of the Middle East happenings were particularly challenged by his enlightening class, both intellectually and emotionally. Probably the most stimulating class I took in B.C.

Passionate, engaging professor with a superb command of global history. Is vocally anti-war, but does not let his ideological biases affect his teaching. As any good professor of History should, he lets the documents speak for themselves.

Zionist idealogues trapped in their own mythology will have a tough time reconciling their narrow view of the world with a course as pluralistic as this one. So, too, will those hoping for Palestinian apologetics. The folly of human behavior in the MidEast is laid bare on all accounts; Zionists, Arabs, Brits and the US.
