The exams are detail orientated, but during lecture he specifies which details are most important. Very informative, wonderful lecture voice, interested in the content and he makes it come alive and keeps it interesting.

Professor Swiny is awesome! I absolutely loved coming to his class. I'm a math major, so history isn't the biggest highlight of my day, but I still loved this class. As long as you go to class, and take good notes, you will do well. I didn't really use the textbooks too much

In general he's a good professor and is always clear as to what's on the test (there are 4 non cumulative exams). Each exam has a review session administered by his T.A. This class covers EUROPE and REGIONS BEYOND EUROPE. Do the readings before class(there are pop quizzes)and you should be fine. 3 required books, 2 of them cost ~$100 each used.

My favorite professor ever, I had no interest in the class prior to taking it but now I love the subject! He's funny and makes lectures interesting. He is also very understanding when it comes to tests and papers. It helps too that he has an adorable British accent making him easy to listen too and the sweetest old professor ever.

Swiny is honestly the best professor I've ever had in college. I was initially deterred by his examination technique being that it was all short answer, which meant you really needed to know your stuff. However, in the end he was SO incredibly helpful and if it wasn't for him, I would have lost a scholarship. Hes a REALLY nice and fair professor :)

I got an A in this class. If you go to class and take good notes, his tests come straight from the notes, I have never opened my textbooks.2 tests, 1 non-cumlative final.Go to the review sessions as well.He is an excellent professor. This coming from a girl who goes out 4 nights a week. I recommend his class, its not the easiest but its do-able.

WHatever you do if you are not intrested in history and just need this class as a gen ed STAY AWAY. The teacher plays tough guy his tests are very difficult he just lectures the entire time and lectures fast so you cannot understand him and it is nearly impossible to get all the notes down. Taking this class for gened was the worst mistake.

Being a classics major without a department to call home, Professor Swiny, who is affiliated with the Anthropology dept, generously adopted me as one of his advisees. Always cheerful with an adorable British accent, he is very knowledgeable about subject matter and considers effort and xtra cred into your final grade, which can be a big easy boost.

Lower level classes with 100's of disinterested freshmen will obviously be rated as hard and boring, but his smaller upper-level classes are refreshing! Full of naughty jokes and funny anecdotes, a class with Swiny will liven up your day. A brilliant, well-respected professor who's written most books you'll cite for the paper. Helpful & fair grader

Lectures are him talking the entire time, so only take this class if you're prepared to go everyday and take a lot of notes. Other than that the class is very easy.

hes a great guy and really into whats hes teaching, but he can be hard to keep up with. he has no slides, he just talks the whole class. he doesnt write anything down so you better be good a shorthand to keep up with him as he speaks. he has random pop quizes on the reading, but there is always extra credit offered.

Do not take this class unless you enjoy going to every class and like taking crazy amounts of notes. Tests are slide identification, fill ins and an essay. Do not take this if you want to get an A.

Great professor. Wonderful classes! One must do the work to get the A, but he is very fair with respect to grading. Tests can be difficult so I recommend many hours devoted to studying the material--but hey, that's what we're all here for, right? Internationally respected and very engaging!

His field techniques class is really hands on. At first you dont really know what your doing because he just tells you to "draw" but you soon figure it out. How he teaches his class is like trial and error. if u do something wrong he tells you. its easier to learn that way i think. he's british or english so he has a sexy accent.hes a cool guy.

Professor Swiny is charming, funny, and internationally respected. He knows his stuff and knows how to teach in a way that is both informative and engaging. A decent chunk of reading each night, and potential pop quizzes at any time. Tests consist of slide identifications, short answers, and an essay. Not an easy A, but a great class!

Honestly, one of the greatest teachers/mentors I have ever had. He is incredibly smart without being arrogant. As an example of his reputation, I was looking to go on a dig in Cyprus and I put in my e-mails to the digmasters around the world that he was my teacher and nearly all of them knew him and told me I was lucky to be taught by him.

I LOVE THIS GUY! He really is the best professor here. This class is so great. I got a B+ by just going to class and studying the slides he puts up. I almost never read the text unless I was confused about something. But you can always ask him questions after class if you dont get it. So0o0o nice and gives a lot of extra credit. A++++ class
