Comment:
Hengeveld is the best choice for BIOL-L111. Her tests contain some lengthy and confusing questions. You can drop a quiz and can replace lowest test grade with final exam grade. Some complain about her and her teaching style but she is very fair and straightforward with what is expected. Gives extra credit for good attendance

Very helpful professor gives extra credit and assignments other than tests to boost grade. This is a challenging course so you will need to study but she gives study guides so I never even used the textbook. She also drops your lowest quiz and lets you drop a test if you do better on the final than your lowest test score. Overall recommend

Dr. Hengeveld is VERY knowledgable on biology. Demanding class - tests require a lot of studying to get a good grade, attendance is important (she talks though powerpoint slides), grades hard and very specifically. Not a terrible professor - just requires a lot work and time with studying. Supposed to read textbook but don't necessarily HAVE TO.

Tips: Do the reading and take notes. Before tests, reread notes and underline the most important things. Attend every lecture. Mastering bio wasn't very helpful; you can use quizlets to check answers before submitting. PACE YOURSELF; quizzes require detailed answers and test questions are usually full paragraphs to read; don't run out of time.

Attendance is key, *especially* at discussion group. Those one-point Top Hat assignments stack up quickly. Not much wiggle room with Dr. Hengeveld. She's pretty no-nonsense and doesn't take BS excuses.

Worst prof I have had so far. She is unbelievably rude and treats you like you're dumb. If your answer on a quiz/exam is not exactly what she said in class, then you will get it wrong or maybe receive partial credit if you're lucky. I have tried reading the book and studying for hours but nothing helps me. And her study guides are awful. Horrible.

the ONLY good thing about her is how easily accessible she is and her grading scale. She drops the lowest of everything. But she's extremely rude. Honestly, you can probably learn more reading the book, watching videos or going to TA's office hours. Her lectures are literally her reading from the slides, which you can do on your own. Beware

Professor Hengeveld is a difficult professor. I find myself struggling a lot in her class because she gives long lectures however, she flies through them at such a rapid pace that it is difficult to get all the info down and listen/understand while typing/writing notes down simultaneously. Her attitude reminds me of blue jays.

Dr. Hengeveld is a very tough professor, but she is very knowledgeable when it comes to her field of expertise (biology) and her field of study (ornithology). Make sure you attend class and take your time on Mastering assignments and discussion activities because they often reappear on the tests and quizzes.

She's passionate about her work and it shows in her lectures. She gives many practice opportunities in class/discussion section so that you can fully master the content. She can be unorganized in her teaching. Read the textbook, go to class, do your homework and you won't have to study that much.

She reads from lectures. She gives information heavy quizzes and not enough time to complete them. She expects you to know every little detail about everything. She lectures til the very last minute of class and gets mad if you pack up even with a minute before class is supposed to end. I would find another teacher.

Shes a great professor that really knows her stuff. However, she can very easily come off as cold, distant, and sometimes plain rude. She also tends to yell quite a bit. If you want to take this class, you better be willing to put in a lot of effort. Its not exactly an easy A. But its a cool class with a knowledgeable professor.

Dr. Hengeveld is a wonderful woman. She's very kind and was more than willing to help outside and inside of her office hours. If you take her class in the fall, she may be less available because of her bird research, but I found the class easy to pass without having to meet with her. She picks great TAs and her lectures are extremely relevant.

I LOVED her. She knows her stuff. She elaborates on nearly everything she says to help you understand. She has an INSANE amount of office hours and usually does extra ones the night before an exam. She is so caring and sweet, but stern enough to make you want to do well.

She reads off the lecture slides a lot but also gives her own input because she knows her info and what she's doing. AI's grade the written quizzes, which is nice. Quizzes are short answer, tests are multiple choice. She recommends you read the book, but I don't read and I've done well. Go to office hours before quizzes and tests, she gives hints.

Goes through tons of notes during lecture way too fast. You can either get the notes down or actually listen to what she's saying, not both. Test questions are terribly worded and have multiple correct answers, requiring you to pick the 'best one', which may be subjective. I would find another prof.
