Comment:

If you don't write exactly what she wants you to write, she trashes your story. If it's a concept she doesn't understand or hasn't experienced directly, she completely degrades it. The only helpful part about this class is the feedback from the peers, her teaching sucks and is eternally frustrating. The least helpful critiques I've ever received.

She has good intentions, but she is aloof and needs a detailed explanation of your piece if you want to have it interpreted correctly. She's restricting on what you can write -- no magic or fantasy even in a normal creative writing class. Her feedback is not helpful, but those of your classmates usual are better. Go elsewhere if you want to learn.

Comment:

Absolutely awful. One of the worst professors I've had throughout my entire educational career. She likes what she likes with writing; if you write anything she DOESN'T like, it's labeled as bad writing, and she degrades your dignity as a writer. I never got constructive feedback, but instead just constantly felt poorly about myself and my writing.

Susan is a great person. Really laid back and she really wants her students to succeed. My only complaint is that assignments are graded strangely and she is not always clear about her expectations.

This is my 2nd time having her as a teacher, and she is one of the most inspirational people I've come across. She's incredibly helpful and really pushes you to be the best writer you can be. Any "harsh" critique she gives is because she wants you to do your best. She really pushed me, and I'm eternally grateful. My writing has never been better.

She''s very blunt and can be harsh in her critiques but I promise it''s because she knows what she''s doing and she''s trying to HELP you. She''s an incredibly kind woman and is more than willing to work with you to write the best thing you can. If you want someone to just kiss you a and tell you how amazing you are avoid her.

This teacher was so frustrating! She gives so much negative criticism on story drafts but no feedback on how to improve your writing. You have to write the content she wants to receive a good grade which defeats the whole purpose of a "creative" writing class. Also, the amount of homework is astronomical and unhelpful. I've learned nothing from her

Some of her comments on your stories are really good, but oftentimes she misses the point and is unable to follow even the slightest shift in plot structure. She also has HUGE biases against genre fiction. Overall though it's a pretty good class, just be prepared to write what she wants.

she doesn't have a creative bone in her body. why she is teaching this class completely baffles me. She stifles creativity and is too stupid to read or follow any story that isn't 100% linear and beats you over the head with all of the facts. She doesn't believe in ambiguity and honestly should be fired immediately and thrown out on the street.

She's nice enough, but she wants you to write what she wants you to write. She tries to be helpful and some of her comments are good, but mostly you have to just learn to take some and leave some. This class was good because it forced me to write. If you just want to chance to write and get some feedback, to improve yourself, then take it.

She hated my stories, but when I changed it to complete death and destruction.. she gave me an "A+". Lesbian tendancies and Suicides! I like it, she said. Damnit, woman. Be more clear next time on what you wanted us to write. I thought this was an OPEN-ENDED class!

Very sweet and helpful! Requires quite a bit of homework and in-class assignments, but you will learn alot from it. Excellent Creative Writing teacher!
