MUST-TAKE Incredibly insightful and knowledgeable about the refugee crisis. Her personality is charming and witty. Impossible to hate her. Ton of reading but teaches you a ton, increasing your understanding of the world. Volunteer experience is amazing and 2hr class goes by quick. Accessible and helpful outside of class. If you are considering the Ethics FOCUS, you have got to take Suzanne's class. She is very knowledgeable about migrants and foreign policy, and her class is very applicable to current events. There is a lot of reading that will be discussed in the lecture, but as long as you have a general understanding of it, you can contribute to the discussion.

Suzanne is probably the most interesting person Ive ever met. Definitely take a class with her before leaving duke. There is a lot of reading assigned but I did not do al of it and still found it easy to participate. It might seem daunting to take a 2+ hour class but it flies by.

without a doubt one of the best. her readings are interesting, make sense within the context of the course, & are eye-opening. a really provocative and charismatic person, amazing, funny lectures, great discussion. really easy to do well, & she's super chill. her classes go really in depth and you'll learn so much with minimal pain. take the class

Professor Shanahan is incredible! Although she assigns a ton of reading, the readings are really interesting, and her lectures are fantastic. Most people in our class did not know much about refugees at first, but many students became passionate about refugees and refugee policy. The class was also service-learning, which made it more engaging.

Hands down the best professor at Duke. Suzanne Shanahan's unbelievable drive and passion for learning extends way beyond the classroom; this is a person I try to emulate every day. She will make you THINK critically about the ethical implications behind our actions. She doesn't care for grades, just wants to make her students learn something.

Suzanne is absolutely incredible! She's someone who inspires learning, critical thinking, and fun. She wants you to learn the material and get something out of it, rather than learn it for a grade. She grants independence and there's not much formal structure. Some of the most interesting discussions I've had on a new topic. Lots of reading though.

Shanahan is one of the most interesting teachers I've ever had. There's not much work (except copious amounts of reading) and she's a fairly easy grader. She's also a super chill person, and makes classes fun.

I really liked her. Except she always wore black. To her credit, when we gave her a hard time about that, she joked with us about it. Good teacher and makes the course interesting.
