Mainly focuses on historical/traditional works in the first half and his lectures set up the historical background. Do the readings and participate in tutorial. Your TA will be your lifeline when it comes to the essay writing so make sure to email them when the time comes. If you're remotely interested in Japanese culture, I'd recommend this class.

Really great, funny, personable guy. Gotta put a good amount of effort in for his assignments but it's an enjoyable class to be in.

He has a lot of stories about experiences in Japan, which are great for a class on Japanese modern culture. His feedback on essays is very useful, and he encourages a lot of free thinking in his literature class. He is able to tie in the course material with historic social issues very well

Let me start by saying as a person Ted is a very nice guy with a cool and exciting life. However as a teacher he is extremely vague and goes on about unnecessary facts about his life and travels in Japan. He drones on about Japanese history and you're not tested on it. Approves an essay topic only to complain about it later. Not a good professor.

Don't even think of this course as easy. Forget about the anime in the first half. Keep up your reading and tell him what you think in the class. He is a fair marker so if you work, it will be reflected in your grades.

Stories and films are semi-interesting if you are into the olden days japanese stuff (before anime/manga). The prof is a hard marker, I regretted taking his class.

Extremely hard in the fall semester. Once you hit winter semester, you get use to his way of teaching. The course is more historical than what you get from course description. No mangas, ~1 or 2 animes, lots of old Japanese films. He grades based on improvements to your writing. All essays must be original with original ideas.

Great guy, really interesting and knowledgeable about Japan. However, his way of marking is confusing and he doesn't really help you all that much. He's encouraging and wants you to think for yourself, but he doesn't really contribute otherwise. The books and films are lovely, but be prepared to read A LOT. (Note: the class is PURE anime club).

Awesome professor! At first I took this course only because Huma level 2000 is mandatory but it ended up being the best class I have taken so far! Interesting movies and most books were interesting (I hate reading...and yet read all of his stuff). Anyone who is interested in Japan, take the class (but bear in mind, you WILL have to read!!)

Overall a very good professor, he has high expectations but that should be the case at the university level of study. To those that complained that all he did was ask questions don't know what university learning is about. Learning should be about you developing your own critical analysis skills.

Laziest teacher on the planet. Had students run lectures and relied solely on the textbook. Direction would drift from lecture to lecture, zero input or guidance from this hippie. More interested in covering nostalgia in Japan than contemporary topics. Marking scheme is difficult, comes with substandard input. Avoid if prof input is necessary.

Horrible prof. Class consisted of students reading book after book, after which he'd literally ask everyone, "so what did you think?". Input from professor was lacking, had students conduct the class the majority of the time through questions. Difficulty with which he marked papers does not correlate to his input into overall class.

He's awesome. Hard marker yes, but he actually had to teach our class how to use quotations so if you did badly it's cause you can't write. He was interesting and funny. The material was great and he was super helpful, to all his favorites AND everyone else. You need to show up and put in the effort. This isn't highschool, deal.
