Textbooks needed. An easy C or B- but an vague old guy doesn't tell you whats on the exam and the right answers are his opinion. if you state something in your interpretation with facts, he will still mark it wrong. also his lectures are BORING and MANDATORY. he whispers and says "um" every 3 seconds. the only way to ace it is to take good notes!

This guy is not good. Prof. Engeman is very vague, a soft-speaker and lacking in good delivery. However, if confronted, he will cave pretty quickly. He is a smart guy and his article's are very in depth, but he averages 4 "um's" a minute and 8 "phenomenon" a class (phenomenon is never used in it's correct usage, btw.)

Oh Dr. Engeman. He is really a bright guy, but he lacks in teaching ability. In one lecture he said "um" or "uh" over 651 times. Yes, I counted. Grading is really random on the tests. My test grades were B+, A-, and then a D. So yeah, I probably wouldnt recommend him if you are worried about you gpa. He is kinda boring too...

DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It's easy, but you won't necessarily get a good grade because his tests are dumb and he has no consistent method of grading. Beyond that, it's an absolutely horrible class. You won't learn anything and you'll be really bored and probably end up fairly frustrated.

Everyone in the department mentions how much of genius this professor is and I truly do believe them, but that doesn't mean he knows how to teach. But I'll tell you this, the exams are extremely easy if you basically spark note the text at minimum to study from. However the class time itself is beyond boring.

He is the worst professor ever. He contradicts himself and the texts, is extremely conservative and suck back in the Cold War, plus he repeats himself a lot. His tests make no grammatical sense and his grading is subjective based on his mood. If you want him to change anything, just be patient with him and pretend you agree with him. He is ****.

Terrible teacher. If you read the books, you still won't be able to answer most of the questions on the tests. Total of 4 tests and a final. Each test has about 6 multi-choice questions and the final is essays. If you mess up one test which everyone does, you won't get an A. The lectures are unbearable and he is incompetent. Do not take this class!

Horrible professor, but nice guy and arguably easier than your sixth grade social studies class. Has very questionable interpretations of the texts, and I wouldn't recommend him if you want to learn something. However, you don't have to do any of the reading and for the three tests you may have to study 20-30 minutes.

Prof. Engeman is a nice person, I could tell that he cares about his students. Unfortunately, his teaching style is lacking. Four books and four tests, including the final (cumulative). There aren?t any deadlines, so it?s up to each individual person to study for the test. He will bore you, but the class is ridiculously easy.

Engeman is a nice old man. He really tries hard to teach and is a good person. With that said, he conducts by far the most boring lecture I have ever had. His mono-tones voice puts you to sleep instantly. His paper grading is random and he is unclear about what he wants other than "I feel you're style could be better". I advice against this class.

I like Dr. Engeman, he is very nice. His choice of books for class is great. He is very forgetful though and can tell you something will not be on the test but (surprise!) it ends up on the test. His lectures are boring b/c he repeats himself often. I think I would learn a lot more from him one-on-one because it is obvious he knows his stuff.

If you want a class to keep you awake and interested, this is NOT the professor you want to take!!! Although he's very nice, his narrow-minded views and ignorance to relavent facts of the world outside Loyola gives proof to the fact that he needs to retire. According to him the Rodney King beating was totally justified & HIV/AIDS no longer exists.

Professor Engeman is a very nice and witty teacher, and he is conservative. The class could be boring at times and he can be hard to hear him sometime, but it is a pretty easy a as long as you listen to the lectures.

Easy on tests. Awful on papers. I consider myself good at writing papers and I got a C on every single paper in his class. Couldn't even remember when he had told us things or not. Would not recommend.

I read the comments and thought they were just bias because he is old and conservative. He is a nice guy who happens to be a horrible, and I mean horrible teacher. I went to almost every class, and I regret enrolling. I have forgotten more than he taught. Summed up whole course in 2 days, the rest was filler. For papers just repeat what he "taught"

Engeman presents a clearly biased view, but it's one you rarely see on todays liberal campuses. His tests are easy, all on the books read.Papers are graded on writing, not on content.Funny guy. Finally a conservative teacher who voices his opinion!

Comment:
Professor Engeman is terrible: class lectures and readings are not on the exams, lectures are all over the place, and his lectures will put you to sleep. He contends that Blacks are lucky to be brought on the boat, that Native Americans have no intellectual history. Yet, his early lectures contend the contrary. He should not be tenured.

I would never take him again!!! Booooooooooooring as hell, repeats the same stuff all over again like 100 times and it's still confusing. But I would say he is very nice, old and I kinda feel sorry for him. Tests are not very hard but it's not easy to get a straight A on them. Read your textbooks to do well on tests as well as write good papers!

This is without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had class in. Confusing...yes very confusing. Don't take him. Boring. I don't know what is he doing in Loyola and holding a teaching position. I know I will avoid him at all cost.
