All you have to do is read the textbook and you'll do fine. Lectures can be dry, but he seems like he wants his students to succeed.

I think he gets a worse wrap on here than he deserves. Lectures can be pretty dry but I mean, come on, its general ecology with a class of 200+ students... what do you really expect? He does make it interesting with his enthusiasm for fungi which he works into the lecture quite a bit. Tests are multiple choice and easy if you put in some effort.

If this is an elective you are considering, I would recommend taking a different course. The course was not engaging, there was no homework/practice for course content, all you have is your notes and the textbook. Lab TAs were overly picky with lab reports. It often took over two weeks to get grades back on exams that were only Scantron.

Terrible boring lectures. Basically have to solely rely on reading the text book. Very unclear what he will be testing on.

Does not post any assignment grades until the last week of classes. You'll wait half a month before getting the exam grades back despite the fact that they're taken on Scantrons.

Class pretty easy, lecture follows the textbook except for a few sections of added information. All tests are multiple choice. Lab is 52% of the grade, lecture 48%. The professor tends to ignore students' emails and even admits it.

Most of the material is a repeat from biology. Read your textbook and you'll do fine. He's an excellent teacher, very enthusiastic and engaging. Plus, super cute!

If you read the text and take your time on the exam this class is pretty easy and the material is definitely interesting. Horton is super nice and will help you with whatever you need.

Fungicentric, but that's his thing. It was a prerequisite intro/survey undergrad course, and most of the students were there under duress. He made it interesting. I enjoyed it, he communicates clearly if you're paying any attention at all. Tests were not hard.

The worst teacher I have had at ESF. I'm sure he knows the material, but he cannot teach. He is very scattered and hard to follow during lectures. The course also is the same as general biology, except 10x's worse in the fact that the information is weaker, and poorly taught.

nice guy buy kind of crappy teacher although it is hard with 250+ students. Lectures are all over the place jumping from graph to graph. His riddle tests will likely keep you from getting above an 85 for lecture even with studying and going to class. Lab is a lot of fun and not much work but teaches you real sampling and analysis techniques.

If you go to class and pay attention the exams are fairly easy, just take your time. Lab is really fun and is the majority of your final grade so make sure you do well in lab. Very helpful and approachable professor.

Horton has no originality, everything in lecture is straight from the textbook. Powerpoints have little necessary information and white font on a dark background, yuck. The class material does NOT support his ridiculous exams (multiple choice, don't address important concepts, and have no clear answer.) The lab will keep my grade up.

His teaching can be erratic at times. His class is not especially difficult, but his exams are generally 80% common sense, 10% things you had to learn, 10% things he covered so briefly that you're unsure you even learned them. Tends to mention his own work a lot. Ask him about one of his studies you found and he'll flip.

Loved this professor! Horton is tough, but in the end, that's what college is for. It WASN'T hard if you studied and went to the lectures. He spells everything out for you in the lectures and he's such a nice guy.

Comment:
The lectures are long and straight out of the book. It's useless to study anything he says. Use the book's website. Most of his test questions are from there. He also was unhelpful when I asked him a question.
