Comment:
Rawski is a great professor, he really cares and knows a lot about the region and the topic. He is interested in his students' responses, but demands a lot. Readings not that helpful or necessary. Take good notes. His sample tests are pretty good indicators of the actual exams.

Class is as boring as it gets. Don't go into the class thinking it will be any relevant information, all he does is talk about his trips to China. Also, his reading assignments contain more work than assignments for all other classes this semester. Have option of taking midterm or writing 20 page paper then taking the final.

Do not let his tough exterior fool you, this man is a great professor. He sees your potential and really tries to help you. If you meet with him, he will even give you a separate syllabus option based on what you want. The most important thing is to spell correctly, watch your grammar and read the textbook. Don't feel like going to class? it'sok

A pretty dry class, overall. What others have said is basically true. He mostly just rambles on about his trips to China and lectures on the country's historic economic performance, government intervention and non-performing loans, etc... You have to write a 20-page paper and final exam, which you don't really know what he expects on it, etc...

I learned more in this class than any other so far at pitt. His grading scale is ridiculous. You will think your grammar is perfect before going into this class. You're wrong because Thomas Rawski says you're wrong. If you're worried about your GPA, don't take this. If you want to learn a lot, I definitely recommend it.

A mixed bag. At first, lectures were extremely disorganized and useless. However, as the semester went on I got more out of lectures. The reading list is absurd, but you can get by if you take good notes in class. He's very old-school: nitpicks your grammer. Still, teaches an interesting subject and seems nice enough.

Most pathetic, unorganized class I have taken so far at Pitt. He just comes in and starts talking about his trips to China. He also gives a ton of readings which are unrelated to his lectures. You have no idea what is important information necessary for his unorganized tests and papers. What a waste!

If you're not an econ. major or interested in Asian studies, class may not be for you. I'm not, so I think it can get boring. He is very knowledgeable, however he goes on many tangents and its hard to tell what is neccessary info and what isn't.

Very demanding with grammar. Insists that you have perfect grammar on in class essays, very demanding reading list but you can get by without doing the readings. Very intelligent and demanding. Not too hard to get a B but difficult to get an A.
