Dr. Newman is one of the best teachers I have had at UAH. He is very clear during his lectures and speaks extremely well. The issue is that he only writes his notes on the board during class, so if you miss class, then you miss a lot of information. He cares about his students, but he also expects a lot from them. The tests are difficult but fair.

Doctor Newman was such an awesome teacher. I knew he tended to be scatterbrained at times, but I believe he made his point clear in class. The exams (except for the first one) are easy if you study. Oh, and he uses different colors when he writes on the board, so if you can color code your notes similar to what he does, you are in good shape.

Newman is the only person I met at UAH who came across as a genuine crazy person. He did things like walk among the desks poking peoples backpacks during tests which he apparently thought would somehow prevent cheating and required assignments to be submitted in a very specific type of pouch. His grasp of the material was weak as well.

He's impressively unreasonable and very bad at answering questions in class. Vocabulary is very important to him and if you forget the specific name of what you're asking about he'll pretend to not understand the question and dismiss it. He assigns crazy amounts of reading and a decent amount of homework which he refuses to explain.

This man knows what he's doing. He's a fantastic orator and explains materials very well. If you've taken MA330 before this, he will teach things in a way that seem contradictory to what you learned in MA330. He's a great instructor, but if you're the student that wants an easy degree, Newman is not the professor for you.

Dr. Newman's lectures are incredible. He's very enthusiastic about what he presents, and is an awesome instructor all around. When he grades, he tends to be a bit more forgiving than his TA, who grades homework. The homework will require you to read ahead of what you are lectured on in class, so that you could complete it in the timeframe given.

Dr. Newman is very well spoken. He is clear and puts a lot of emphasis into the things he wants his students to remember. He is also one of the toughest graders I have ever had! If you have questions about homework problems you will have to wait. Dr. Newman stresses that he wants his students to rework missed problems and think about it.

An excellent educator. Dr. Newman is always willing to listen and give feedback as well as answers. You will definitely need the textbook for his CS214 class, and some of the questions on homework and tests will come from it. I'd say he teaches more toward the theory side, but mainly about being able to apply the theory to any given problem.

He will scare you into learning. He tries to throw you off by saying conflicting facts, where one is a lie and will lose you a letter grade on the test. Focus very hard on the theories and definitions, the math is not important for passing at all. If you don't know a very abstract part of a theory exactly, your test grade drops a letter grade.

Lots of course work covering lots of math topics that often do not build on previous topics. PROOFS! Took as a night class, and he insisted we use the help desk that was only open during the day. The help desk routinely gave incorrect help on our graded HW. He does not answer email. Cumulative final is brutal. Take someone else for 214.

He's one of the best orators in the college, and actually displays interest in the topics. He can be picky on grading, but well within reason. He often explains a topic in theory more than application, but his is always willing to explain details if you ask. He WILL make you work for your A though; be prepared to spend late nights on projects.

Beware. Only graduated 7 PhD students in 18 years, all either research or teaching assistants. In spite of a full pipeline of Ph.D. students, no one has defended since Mar. 2010, nearly 4 years ago. Takes a very long time to do research with this one.

Discouraging from the word go! A workaholic illusionist who so full of himself, there's no space left but for the rules and regulations. Stubborn by definition, he justifies how over-doing one thing can lead to massive failure. Clearly An authoritarian who does not know how to teach, trying to control the class as if to prove his superiority??

I kind of signed up for this class by accident. I meant 2 take an art class, but got the wrong code by mistake. I kept on with it and learned so much that I got an A. I was amazed by his photographic memory. His lectures are very interesting. Even if CS is not your thing U will like this course! Prof is very likeable & easy 2 get along with.

Kind of full of himself. Not a good teacher. He clearly knows the material very well but its too bad that he has no idea how to teach it. He was my first C grade ever. Time for him to leave teaching and work in the industry full time. Let a better teacher take your spot.

Dr. Newman is probably the best lecturer I've ever had. The guy is very intelligent, knows his stuff, and is passionate about it. He gives around 7 homeworks, that range from moderately easy to moderately hard. The tests are straight forward for the most part, but he'll throw curves on tests to make you think ... he doesn't like memorization.
