You have to make time to do the weekly readings and prepare for the midterm/final, also have to attend a mandatory discussion section every week. The midterm consists of terms, maps and a short essay, the final is a long essay, you get a month to do it. While the lecture days can be boring, if you can get through them this is a great choice.

I absolutely loved this class. The lecture notes are sent to you if you go to class, which is really nice. I loved the lectures, they were very engaging. You are graded by a midterm, a final, a visit to the Art Institute, and participation. The study guides are super helpful for the midterm and final. The books are super interesting too!

Not good at history and got an A. If you come to lecture you don't have to take notes because your TA will send them to you. TA does most of the direct teaching. One midterm (study for that!), a final paper you will have a month to do and get feedback, and a final (study!), readings too but I just sparknoted them and was fine. Solid choice.

Dr. Gilfoyle is a great choice for US history. Show up to class if you want his lecture notes. There is a discussion section with his class, but it's not bad at all! Just say at least one thing per class. His midterms and final are graded by his TA's, so they are pretty easily graded. Overall, if you study and do the readings, it's a fairly easy A.

One of the best prof. I had. He assigns 7-8 books, which made this class a nightmare. He drop the midterm if you score higher on final. Exams include essay question, IDs, map or picture. Grades them easy and gives the questions beforehand. You HAVE to participate in the discussion to get points. Don't take if you hate reading a lot of books.

Only discussion group is required to attend. Professor Gilfoyle is very passionate and a great teacher. Class is graded easily, would definitely take as your history tier 2 credit

I dislike history and this class made it SO bearable!! You're supposed to read 8 books in the class, I got an A with just skimming each book bc the discussions tell you everything you need to know about them. Final paper is 8-12 pages and that's basically the only writing you do. He tells you everything you need to know for the midterm/final.

Lectures are efficient and interesting. There is no textbook for the actual class, only readings for the discussion section. Instead, his lecture notes are sent to everyone who attended the lecture afterward, so attendance is pretty vital to doing well in this class. All of the assignments for the class are graded by his TA's FYI

Difficult class , but the professor was very friendly and approachable. Expect readings, a midterm, final, etc. If you do better on your final than on your midterm, he drops your midterm and counts your final twice; participation is weighed heavily on your final grade. Gilfoyle is a likeable guy, but expect a harsh workload when taking this class.

Worst history class I've ever taken. Gilfoyle and his junior professors structure the course so that it's unreasonably difficult to receive an A. The lectures are boring, the workload is excessive, and the professor himself can seem rather pretentious. Avoid this course.

For the tests and final paper you need to use a ridiculous amount of text references. His grades are based on text and lecture information. Also in class participation is KEY. My grade went from an A to C+ because of in class participation. Nice teacher, and provides a lot of notes when he grades.

I hate history because I am so bad at remembering names and dates. With Gilfoyle, you don't need to memorize anything. As long as you pay a little attention, have a general understanding of the lectures, and skim the readings (they really aren't too long) you'll get an A. Gives you questions for the midterm and final in advance! Super sweet guy.

I hate this class so much. He makes you read eight books throughout the semester and you have to mention every one in your essay or you get points off. He sends out the lecture notes and the questions that will be on the exam prior which is nice but his lectures are the most boring thing ever. Also you don't get notes if you don't come to class.

I absolutely loved this class. Professor Gilfoyle and his junior professors were fantastic. You do need to read all the books that are assigned, they are CRITICAL for discussion and the midterm/final. I'm not a history person but I would take this class again in a heartbeat.

HISTORY MAJORS- avoid this class, you will not learn a single thing. The overall workload is ridiculous and the final paper is really hard. I got easy A's in the prior 5 history classes i'd taken but this one was a VERY tough B. Lectures are boring and the TA's notes are not good.

Will drop midterm grade for final. lectures are interesting. Gilfoyle is super nice and teaches stuff more interesting than any other history class. show up and get a good grade

Love the class and the teacher. He makes history so interesting and relevant to today. We don't have a textbook, rather many shorter readings throughout the semester. It is a lot, but if you split it up over different nights, it is completely manageable. I hope I can take another class with him.
