He's intense about the subject but is extremely knowledgable. Made the class enjoyable by ripping on a few smart-asses. Enjoyed the class and the prof but takes work to get a decent mark.

We didn't call him the coke man for nothing! Be prepared for his hyperfast lecture style. Lots of notes and concepts to learn. If you do the required readings you'll be fine. Gives the exam questions beforehand. Alway is very approachable and knows his economics. I learned a lot - but it was no cake walk!

Alway is clear, direct and blunt when it comes to the course material, which allows him to teach so much more than the Carleton average. Once your pen goes down on the page, you will be kept writing for the duration. Some people won't be able to keep up and will whine incessantly about it. FYI, his lectures are probably sponsored by Coke.

Exchange student from out of Carleton, but if all Carleton instructors are as articulate and knowledgable as Alway and Schmidt, I'm transferring here. Alway's classes are ALWAYS well planned, super-interesting and he's interesting to talk to, maybe because he drinks too much coke. He kinda looks like a cartoon character too.

Incredibly smart guy, and very approachable. He's even willing to pre-mark term papers (if you get them done early). But be warned, there is a lot to learn in this class...

Took this class three times (in the interest of full disclosure I only "attended" two of them), Alway was miles ahead of the other Prof.

This guy, to put it quite simply, is a first-class jerk. I did not benefit at all from his lectures...he loved to hear himself talk, and would just drone on and on. On my essay (which was marked by someone else), he lowered my mark by one full grade....right in front of me! He needs to lighten up and realize that his students are human beings.

Very good prof. Very knowledgable about both poli sci and economics. Despite my attempts to ask difficult questions on purpose to confuse him, he only had trouble with 2 of them. well done :)

Reads from his notes more than he really discusses his topic. Language is flowery and academic, which clouds the point.

Talk about a PhD with his head in the clouds, this guy is clearly well read but has a tough time imparting material to second year students. He's one of those that is going to have change to get tenure status.
