What an incredible man, gifted teacher, and inspiring artist. I was so lucky to have taken his classes many times. he has helped me transform as an artist and look at the world through new eyes. He will push you as much as you want, and self eval at the end of each class.

Tom is an amazing and inspiring art prof. If you love art and/or want to improve, he will go out of his way to help you and push you to your potential. Inspired me to declare my major as studio art. Self eval grading, so a breeze as long as you show up and try. All art students should take him!!

Basically, you were handed 4 paintbrushes and a couple tubes of paint and told to make 4 paintings. Easy class, not for learning technicalities, but Tom talks a lot about passion and intuition. Self-evaluation for your grade at the end.

Basically, you get back what you put forth. The class was very laid back and it was a very inviting environment. It is true- he doesn't cover the technical aspects of painting- but that's half the fun! It's great being able to have the freedom to create with the helpful guidance of Tom.

So yea like some comments said, if you're a straight up beginner, don't take this class. If you have some painting experience, then its great. I loved this class because I've painted in one class b4 and wanted to grow, so it was perfect for me. Tom was cool. You can't teach pple to paint, but u can b guided by someone like him.

If you want a professor who walks around the room delivering philosophical soundbites all day rather than teaching about painting-this may be the class for you. If you are a true beginner in painting and need technical advice-you can forget it-you will not get that from Mr. Askman. He will tell you to do a color wash but will never demo or explain

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE, like the last person said, avoid his classes at ALL COSTS! The effort and hard work you put into the class won't get you a good grade. He judges students and once his opinion is formed you will face the wrath of this when you see your grade. Don't expect to learn any painting technique- he's too busy blabbing about philosophy.

This man will change your life. He is inspiring and motivational. It is very easy to tell that he is compassionate about teaching students. He encourages you to embrace your own style. He changed me as an artist as well as a person. Tom is amazing. I would recommend everyone, not just art majors, to take a class with Tom.

I grew more as an artist with Askman than I had with any other teacher. His class provided me the freedom to explore my own thing. He was personable, encouraging, and blatantly honest...therefore extremely helpful. Great guy. Awesome professor.
