Mr. Russell puts a lot of work into his lectures, and has a lot of fun interacting with the class. Like others have said, your grade is completely dependent on which TA you get. It seemed like most were pretty laid backed and generous with how they graded papers. The class is really easy overall, and is a great choice for your arts general.

TA determines your grade. Weekly quizzes and papers, but quizzes are easy enough and papers are only one page long. Every week you have to go see the assigned film so just plan to take the time to do that. Attendance is mandatory, but Tom gave great lectures.

This was such a fun class! Tom always made the lectures super fun and engaging. You do have to write a paper every week but it's just one page, written about the movie you watch that week. Tom is really knowledgeable and you can tell he loves what he does.

Tom is amazing!! His lectures are great and funny, and he's very passionate about what he teaches. TMA 102 isn't a difficult class as long as you pay attention, do the reading, and take notes. You'll definitely get a new perspective on film by taking this class.

Tom is GREAT. He singlehandedly converted me to being a Media Arts Major. The class is not too difficult, and most of the work is quite enjoyable (i.e. watching movies). His lectures are very interesting and reveal that he has an amazing outlook on life. Take this class to fulfill your Arts general requirement. You won't regret it.

I am an exercise science major, who just took this class to knock out the GE, but this class literally changed my entire perspective on media. It is not a lot of work, but you learn so much and have a blast while doing it. Make sure you get a good TA, as they do all the grading, I highly recommend this class to anyone!!

Everyone at BYU should take this class. Truth is, grading is completely dependent on which TA you get, Tom doesn't get involved in that at all. But he is an inspiring professor who incorporated the gospel in amazing ways. Homework is reading, an online quiz, and writing an analysis paper each week on a specific movie watched outside of class.

If I could take only one course at BYU, it would be TMA 102. It teaches you to be attentive, to analyze, and to think, which are completely underestimated skills for any career and life in general. It was also one of the most spiritually uplifting classes I have taken. Tom is the best, the type of professor that would teach just for the love of it

Probably one of the best lecture classes I've ever taken. There was rarely a dull moment amidst his artful and often inspirational lectures. He did an excellent job with connecting media to the LDS gospel uncontrived. His humor, taste and passion make him extremely likable. Ladies: beware of developing a teacher-crush on Professor Russell!

Tom is great, but you only see him once a week and he has no sway on your grade. Your TA grades EVERY assignment and decides your ENTIRE grade. Because of this, the class really depends on which TA you get. Be aware that this class takes quiet a bit of time because their is a weekly movie, paper, and quiz. Quizzes are SUPER easy though. Good GE!

Tom is so inspiring because he is so passionate. I also loved how spiritual the class was. I did not expect this as film is traditionally more of a liberal subject, but he had a way of making you understand others viewpoints and becoming more open minded that actually complemented the values of the gospel. All through film. It was amazing.
