Professor Abusch is wonderful. He is a serious professor and scholar, and definitely an expert in his field. His lectures are interesting and very detailed; you can tell he puts quite a lot of work into them. He is very compassionate and helpful to disabled students.

To the students who think that NEJS 142b was "boring:" you were in the wrong class. Basketweaving 101 is down the hall, buddy. Abusch is one of THE living masters of the field, and his enthusiasm is contagious. Attendance is mandatory because folks who don't get it tend to skip. Forcing you to drop the class is his way of keeping out the riff-raff.

I took his ancient Babylonian witchcraft and demonology class a few years ago; the students who didn't get it were expecting Jewish theology, not Babylonian magic. Prof. Abusch assigned some of the best texts in the field, and he was able to bring that material to vivid life and enhance the texts with original reserach and a unique insight.

His class on Genesis was very text/grammar oriented. His syllabus left something to be desired and we never really knew what he was grading us on. We had one "midterm" (but it wasn't really graded) and a final paper.

His lectures are scattered, he takes peoples' own opinions as offensive and can be very disrespectful to them. Though the class size is small, he waves students hands down when they would like to comment, which seems to cause people to want to speak less. Then he complains that the class doesn't do enough discussion.

He can be a bit tedious as a lecturer, but he knows this about himself, and really does his best to keep his students engaged, such as by encouraging class discussion. He is basically a really nice, interesting guy.

I took Dealing With Evil in Ancient Babylonia. I purchased less than half of the books for the class, and read less than half of the required readings. He's a tedious lecturer, but attendance is required. His TA's grade EVERYTHING!
