Lots of reading, but it's all fun and interesting. Classes are almost entirely discussion-based, so participation is important, but Carroll is entertaining and makes the time fly by. Easily accessible in office hours and a fair grader when it comes to papers. Definitely one of the more easygoing English professors I've had.

I lovedddd Professor Carroll. Let me explain something-- I hated Shakespeare before taking his course. As an English minor, that was not ideal. HE CHANGED ME! He is so hilarious, always making pop culture references and jokes, super into participation, loved his course and everything about him. Lots of reading and film, but it was all fun!

Just an all-around great human being. He cares about students beyond just the class. It's been 4 years since I graduated BU and he still stands out as one of the best teachers I've ever had.

His classes are not like high school; he can find meaning in a "-". His knowledge is incredible, like he eat, sleeps and breathes Shakespeare. He is entertaining and wise. The trouble is he knows it. Classes can get lecturey, & with papers it's tough to impress him. But I found myself not wanting to listen to others because he's so much smarter.

Prof Carroll is probably the best professor I've had at BU. He is extremely learned and will make you love Shakespeare even if you thought you would never be interested. His class is a joy to take; every lecture is interesting and funny without a single dull moment. Take one of his classes if you have the chance, English major or not!

Prof. Carroll is amazing. He's the best English professor I've had at BU. He definitely knows his stuff and then some. I gained a whole new respect and appreciation of Shakespeare thanks to Prof. Carroll. He's a very fair grader. It's a 1 1/2 hour long class that I actually don't mind going to. Take a class with Carroll if you have the chance.

Prof. Carroll is great to talk to during office hours and makes lectures enjoyable by breaking them up with movie clips. You'll definitely get a lot of useful info. High standards for papers though-you really have to have an inventive thesis, since repeating material from class won't get you higher than a B.

Everyone loves Prof Carroll! One of the best ENG professors I've had at BU--good lecturer, helpful, funny, shows movie clips, fun class. You can't help but appreciate Shakespeare so much more after this class. He has high standards for essays. Shakespeare's 1/2 Bday celebration was great! English majors have to take this class w/him--it's the best!

I think the comments on this page are way too harsh. Obviously this class is made for Shakespeare lovers, or people who can appreciate the work. Prof. Carroll is informative, interesting, and most of all, excited about what he teaches. He was the president of the American Shakespeare Society the semester I took the class...he knows his stuff!

Professor Carroll was not HOT. Although he was somehow able to make lectures interesting, his grading system was arbitrary and he was horrible at responding to e-mails. Maybe he just didn't like me.

I loved Carroll. Very enthusiastic, funny, helpful teacher. Byttebier was a GREAT TA. Came out of the class feeling like I learned something and felt my grades were well deserved. Take Murphy if you can, but Carroll is a GREAT alternative. Loved lectures. Overall enjoyable experience.

Cool guy. I found him not to be so helpful unless you were one of his favorites, but he makes Shakespeare interesting, which has to count for something. Overall, good experience.

He's fantastic!! I took two of his classes in a row, and he is very clear, very easy to understand. A difficult grader, but if you ask him for help he will more than happy, and genuinely improve your writing. He's really funny, too. Take his class, definitely!!
