got me interested in microbiology. surprisingly his slides are great if you use a book to supplement with and tho his lecture may be boring many times, he actually explain things well if you pay attention. I had the other professor who teaches in spring for a week, but Ghiorse is much better. He doesn't trick you, and he is willing to help always!

Engaging at first but he quickly becomes boring. He yells a lot during class and emphasizes things that seem trivial. He's great if you want to learn about life on Mars, but otherwise not very interesting. About half the class stopped showing up to lecture. Killed my interest in the subject.

Ghiorse seems to care about students' doing well in this course. However, he is quite soft-spoken and is hard to hear in lecture. The Powerpoint presentation he makes are pretty awful; most slides have far too much information and distracting colors. Otherwise, Ghiorse is fair and knowledgable. Plus, there are plenty of extra credit opportunities.

This guy's theatrics will keep even the most unenthusiastic person awake in class. He tells you what he wants you to know and then tests you on it- can't get more fair than that. Reading the textbook is unnecessary- just go to lecture and study the ppt slides (posted online.) Loved the class, can't wait to take the lab this spring.

His lectures are lively, but kinda pointless. He ends up getting stuck on some dumb detail and repeating it instead of getting through the material. He's very enthusiastic and nice though. Quizes are tough. Exams are fair. Read the book. I didn't and did bad. Going to lecture is hardly helpful. As far as advanced bio courses go, this one is good.

Most enthusiastic professor I've had. Wow! The concepts are pretty interesting too, but I recommend the lab BioMi 291 to go along with it. The lab made the information in class a lot more relevant and it was really fun. The class is kind of far (by the dairy bar) but it wasn't that bad of a walk (or bus ride).

The yelling during lecture is really annoying; you can get by just fine with the takenote if you're willing to pay for it. The tests and quizzes are easy as long as you've studied, and the other assignments are just a matter of putting the necessary time in (which isn't too much anyway). Good class.

Aaahhh, Dr. Ghiorse. Love him. The best thing about him is his incredible enthusiasm for teaching. He seems to genuinely like it & he even got some sort of award for it. He's head of the department, so he knows his stuff. Also, this isn't like the boring science classes you took freshman year. By the end, you'll actually like bacteria.

As has been said, Ghirose's lectures involve lots of yelling and gesticulating. The problem is, he yells unimportant words like "WATER!" and "AND!" His powerpoints look like collages, and he is terribly unorganized. It's an easy A, but don't bother going to lecture - you won't learn anything. Just study the powerpoints.

Dr. Ghiorse is enthusiastic and extremely loud, by his lectures are not very effective. You'll end up learning everything yourself using the book. Quizzes are often very tricky, but manageable. Exams are very easy. The curve was generous, so it was not too difficult to earn an A- or B+ (the median grade). The subject material is very interesting.
