Comment:
Professor Shirley is really comical which made the course a little bit better, however, starting off in the semester it may be difficult to grasp what he wants. Everything is done through the syllabus. Definitely show up because there are quizzes after every lecture. The class requires a lot of case briefs, but they're pretty easy.

Dr. Shirley is great person, but he is not a great professor. I failed all of his tests and I would study for 10 hours a week and it still did not pay off. He hates to be wrong so beware of that. His lectures do not make sense half the time and his tests are very hard. Also you do not know your grade until the end. I would run away if I were you.

Every morning before general Chemistry Lab there was a quiz over lecture material. If you didnt go to lecture you missed the quiz questions. Also some material on the quiz wasnt even taught in lecture. This class is why Im leaving chemistry major.

Worst teacher I have ever had. I have never had a problem understanding any subject, especially chemistry, and I had no clue what was going on or how to do any of the new stuff he was teaching.

This class is really tough BUT it has a really awesome grading scale. There are 4 or 5 tests through the semester and they are all Scantron. Attendance grade is for real (5%). You will need a Smartwork password, sold separately for $25. Current book is not necessary, buy an old one for 1/10 price. You could get by with no book tbh.

The chemistry department at pitt is bad but Shirley is pretty good despite that. He's very organized and actually goes over all the material. Chemistry is very hard to teach but he does a good job.

Do not take this class. The lectures are unrelated to the homework, which are unrelated to the test, which was unrelated to the final. Dr. Shirley did not seem to care if any of us were understand concepts (as evidenced by the poor grades nearly everyone received on tests). Very bad class. The textbook teaches better chemistry than he did.

This class was EXTREMELY difficult when it should not have been. Lectures not clear and he assumes that you already know things before they are taught. What was stressed in lectures weren't even the majority of the exam questions. Also, he was very hard to find whenever I needed questions answered. Needless to say, this was my first B.

Shirely os one of the better Gen. CHEM 1 teachers (and still isn't a good one). He does a decent job touching base on most of the topics that need to be covered but doesn't get everything that is on the test. The exams are also MUCH harder than anything covered in class. Shirely is not helpful, doesn't answer questions, and will bore you to death.

An attrocious teacher. Monotone all class long. Makes the class incredibly boring and does not give a lot of help because he does not know the answer a lot of the time. Huge thumbs down

Really boring and his lectures are not helpful at all. Everything I learned in this class was self taught from the book and occasionally the slides. It doesn't help that the homeworks are assigned prior to having lectures on the subject material. Overall I would advise taking a different professor.

He's a nice enough instructor; and he does an amazing thing with his students; he expects them to take notes in his lectures and read the book in his free time; if you don't do this; it is unlikely you will get an A. Class average is in the 40's. His lecture style is dry and humorless; but here are a few jokes in there for those that look for them.

He's dry and Boring.... But he can,t be blamed for hard exams which are made same for All sections(not just for his) and by mutual corporation of chem department NOT by one single professor. Intense class. Need to be awake and Eyes wide open if want an A which's at 85%.

Not a recommended teacher if you have anything to do with chemistry. Very arrogant, and seems to get frustrated when students ask questions. Very monotone and boring.

If you want to have an entire semester of your senior year ruined, then go ahead and take his class. Doesn't teach, doesn't seem like he even wants to be a teacher. He throws crazy hard stuff at you that you've never seen before and expects you to come up with calculations and theories *magically* in your head or something. he's impossible.
