I unfortunately decided to take this as part of my AfroAm minor but it seems as if I'm probably going to fail. He rambles quietly at the front of the class about information that is not really relevant to what you've been reading. I basically want to cry. He's really smart but in all honesty do not take this class.

Shouldnt be considered an educator. only has 3/4 papers midterm and final. Midterm was ridiculous with irrelevant questions where everyone failed and never told us what was going to be on final. TA's were just as lost as the students. horrible professor. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.

Do not take this class with him! He is one of the worst professors I have had. In lecture he speaks about material that is irrelevant to what you are reading in the books. Also his midterm was unfair because he asked the most random and extremely specific questions. Also if it was not for my TA I would have no idea what was going on in the class.

He was the most ridiculous professor I have ever had. You couldn't understand a word he was saying in our large, gen-ed lecture hall, and for over half the class he just played videos that we easily could have watched online. His exams were completely irrelevant to the subject matter. I was interested in the subject matter before taking this class.

he was awful, overloaded us with reading, never clairified anything, made an enviroment where students wern't comfortable asking questions, and gave us no information about how we were doing in this class, or help prepare for tests.. i am pissed i took this class because it was a waste of my money, and time!

Most likely one of the hardest professors; yet by far the most rewarding. For GOP supporters, don't bother showing up, unless you possess an open mind. We covered racism throughout American History as a white male, I was stunned. Kids who ****, go back to Isenberg where everything is handed to you. Strickland teaches how Faulkner writes, its hard

Horrible teacher. Textbooks for this class cost more than my other 3 combined, and its only a 100 level. Doesn't engage students, everyone is bored and disinterested. Avoid at all costs.

This class has the potential to be a great class but his teaching style is terrible. He is barely audible and rambles on about his own opinions. Do not recommend him for ANY class.

Bill is one of only two professors at UMASS who's instruction has prepared me for the rigors of law school. His interest in the subjects combined with his personal experiences and general brilliance made the classes I took the best of my undergrad. Warning: be prepared to read alot. If you don't actively engage him you'll get less out of the class.

I had high hopes for this class. Unfortunately after the first month he shortened his lectures to only five minutes long and began to go on tangents about Bush. Despite this, he expects you to understand the theory in-depth and be able to explicate it in an 10 page paper. He's brilliant, but a useless teacher.

Overall good class. He is very intelligent but intimidating at first. He likes to comment on everything and goes off on tangents about politics. He can be pretty unclear and talks to himself a lot, but he definately knows his stuff on Du Bois. The whole class comes down to a quiz and a research paper.

Our class was definately difficult, but Prof. Strickland warned us the first day that it was. He is blatently Left Wing, so I would advise Republicans not to take him because he said that Republicans were **** every class. Being a liberal myself, I really enjoyed him though; he's passionate, thoughtful, fun and calls you "Jack" if he likes you.

Took several classes with him and he advised my thesis. One of the smartest and most charismatic professors I've had. Intimidating, very political, but this is what makes him so interesting. His notes on my thesis progress were at first glance totally incomprehensible but after some thought greatly improved it. He knows what he's talking about.

He was completely unhelpful. Pushed his own agenda, doesn't give notes. Doesn't really lecture either - basically just stands there and rants forever.

Professor is a smart guy, gives some really interesting reading, shows way too many movies in class. Lectures are disorganized, unhelpful and confusing and there are readings (whole books) which he never even discusses. Tests and assignments can be unreasonable and to sum up the class, it made me want to bang my head against the wall.

I loved the class. It was refreshing to have a professor who was a part of the civil rights movement first hand. Papers are diffcult but rewarding. I am looking forward to taking other classes with him.

A condescending idiot who gets ahead by putting down students who are too young or afraid to stand up to him. In lieu of using actual teaching materials, resorts to showing movies. Another one that UMass should fire.

Too many movies, didn't stick to the topic or explain material, but indulged his own opinions and conspiacy theories. Said he wanted students to think critically but really wanted us to spit back his lines. Very self-important.
