Fantastic professor in that he will prepare you for 1) work in International Development and 2) NPSIA courses. However, this means his expectations are quite high, and his exams require ALOT of studying.

This is a tough course but you will learn a lot from it. Lots of theory but very policy relevant as well. Samy is one of the best profs I have encountered at NPSIA.

Brush up on your first year macro and micro before taking this course and you will do a lot better. Samy is a fine prof, but I found the class focused solely on traditional neoclassical economics and did not look enough at differing perspectives on economic development. Very dogmatic in that sense and no room for discussion or debate.

He is terrible at teaching, a poor communicator and a highly critical and unpleasant individual. He also has terrible people skills.

A challenging class. Brush up on your old economics classes and keep up with the readings because otherwise you'll be lost. The final exam is a total killer, but the grades get boosted to keep it from being a disaster.

Comment:
Heavy emphasis on economics in this class. Brush up in advance if you can. Prof came across critical and a bit cynical at the beginning, but partly because he was trying to spark discussion. Turned out to be nice as semester progressed. Lectures were not very focused, but class is based on discussion of student presentations anyway.

He is a very approachable professor and is quite flexible. He is relatively new to teaching. He's definitely knowledgeable about economics, but perhaps could broaden his view when teaching other subject areas. He could also focus his lectures a bit more.

I left his course knowing much more about economics than most. He's very smart, and likes to challenge the people who find economics too easy while laying off on the poor saps like me. I'm glad I took it.
