Comment:
Dr Barel is HARD and there is no way around it (Calc II is hard enough to begin with). He is a a brilliant man and has a great sense of humor, but not always the clearest. He grades fairly and is very generous with partial credit (necessary since the questions are so hard). He can seem intimidating but will definitely help if you ask.

Brilliant man. Although, he has trouble relating to his students. I often found my questions unanswered simply because he could not fathom why I couldn't understand the material and thus he could not clarify the content. He teaches his students as though they have the same mathematical knowledge as him. Very few examples, hard to understand. Avoid.

This may have been the worst professor I have had. He is great if you are a natural at Math, but if you aren't steer clear of him.

He is very easy to get along with and he is funny, but his expectations are extremely high. He requires perfection, so if you are in a mathy major I would highly suggest him. But if you are just trying to get the credit then take another, easier, professor.

Barel is a highly intelligent and funny professor; however, what he makes up for in personality, he lacks in his teaching. He lacks clarity and often writes problems on the board without explaining them. His tests are hard and are graded even harder, even down to the wording. Even after math tutoring, I still struggled. Take another class.

He expects a lot out of his students and does not really understand people who may be naturally bad at math. He does give a lot of points, though so if you do poorly on a test, it's not the end of the world. His tests are HARD though, so be warned! He also is a pretty funny guy.

Very knowledgeable, but not always clear. Tells very interesting stories about the history of math.

He does not explain material well. Grades very harshly and believes notation is more important than the problem itself. Would not recommend this professor.

He is really knowledgable, but doesn't communicate that knowledge to his students very well. He is way too obsessed with words to be a math teacher. He is funny in class. He makes harsh, pointed remarks when he grades projects and tests.

Did not seem interested in explaining problems asked in class. Was extremely unwilling to go over problems more than once to clarify. Seemed interested in getting through chapters and moving on to the next section and not into class comprehension. If math is hard for you then don't take his class.

Dr. Barel has a great dry sense of humor - he cracks himself up all the time. He's very into the theory of mathematics, but not always into actually working out examples in class. Sometimes I got the feeling that he hadn't fully explained a concept. If you're not gonna be a math major, you'll be fine, but if math is your thing, take someone harder.

Comment:
Barel didn't seem honestly interested in explaining mathematical concepts. In linear algebra, there are abundant connections to geometry that help to understand intuitively what's going on, but Barel just proved theorems and gave tests. Student interaction was low.

Not clear at all, expects too much writing on tests and homework. Lose basically all credit for anything if you just work out the problems with no written reasoning. Allllot of homework, and he doesn't even grade it himself, he has (very harsh and strict) graders.Would never take a class with this professor again.

he taught diff eq sort of well. you could tell that he knows a lot of stuff, but isn't always great at explaining it. on tests, he makes you write down your reasoning and takes off points when you don't, even if your work is clear about what you did.

Very helpful and intelligent. Makes the class challenging as it should be seeing as it is a college 200 level course. Can only really pass the class if you do your homework, read the book, and pay attention.

As he is from Bulgaria, his accent was a little hard to understand at times, but he seems to like teaching and seems a little like Einstein. Functions and Models isn't easy unless you are really good at Math, but if you are prepared to try really hard, you can pass it.
