If you can get used to his accent, then he is actually pretty funny. Always willing to help and gives bonus marks for all students so that they can do better.

Hes a genuinely nice man who wants you to do well and even gave us two bonus assignments to improve our grades. The reason this class sucked was we often had to do these discussions which involved dr Chen arguing with himself and not allowing anyone to make their own points. Needless to say marking was easy but super hard to stay focused

Dr. Chen is a great guy! I really enjoyed his class and recommend hstr265 if you're interested in imperial China. The only downside is he isn't the most clear with instructions, even though he tries very hard to clarify. The what you're being marked on is confusing, yet marked fair. I did not like his TA this semester though.

This class was the wildest ride of my entire LIFE. Chen has a very thick accent and is frequently hard to understand but is at the same time incredibly funny. His jokes are edgy and he is a real troll. However his grading is incredibly fair and it is impossible to not be ENTERTAINED by just sitting in class and watching it unfold...

Dr. Chen is a fair marker. He provides students with inspiring insights into Chinese history no matter of the ancient or modern period. It has a great learning experience with Dr. Chen. It is also a pleasure to read the interesting textbooks he assigned.

Even beyond his accent which takes a bit of getting used to, his lectures were disorganized, his midterm's grading was unclear, and he still uses an overhead projector for his slides. He bumped up the whole classes' mark on the midterm by 10%, but he felt unprepared for every class. I would avoid.

Prof Chen is a great professor. His accent threw me off for a little while, but I quickly got used to it. He makes his expectations very clear at the beginning of the semester, and his lectures are easy to follow. He is an extremely fair marker, and I look forward to taking more classes with him.

Great professor. Strong accent but his old fashioned overhead projector slides. Overall good class and a relatively easy marker.

Comment:
This class focused way too much on comparing modern western civ to ancient China and not nearly enough on actual history. Also, the transparency notes were incomprehensible and the assignments were mostly unevenly divided groupwork. I don't have many good things to say about this prof, except that he seemed like a nice guy and tried hard to do well

This man does not seem qualified to teach Chinese history. When students ask intelligent questions, Dr Chen mumbles a half-assed response and rushes on to the next point. There is nothing thoughtful about his class. He spends half the time telling irrelevent stories. He showed us a worthless movie clip on the second day. I recommend staying away.

Zhongping Chen is a really great professor and probably the only history prof I have had who has given me useful information for a job. The only real difficulty is getting used to his accent, but you'll get past that after the first week or so. Highly recommended.

If you are a first year that believes history is about remembering dates, and turning your teacher's point form lecture notes into sentences then this professor is for you. Go buy a pack of flash cards you will probably get an easy A. However, if you believe history can be exciting and thought provoking; do yourself a favor. find another prof.

First two days are difficult with the accent, but then its fine. Take notes on what he says as well as the overhead, not just the overhead or you wil be lost. He really makes Chinese History come to life. He is a good teacher and checks over the bad marking from the TA.
