Working with him as a composition student was one of the greatest gifts. I owe so much of my progress to him. He WILL call you out when you're not putting in the time. I used to be upset that he never really complimented my work, but he does it because he wants you to improve. He truly wants all of his students to excel. Truly exceptional.

Music majors-- take these reviews w/ a grain of salt because many are honors college reviews. Carter is a great man and personal mentor. He has high expectations, but for your own good. He's incredibly intelligent, but sometimes lacks clarity. An excellent professor. On papers, his handwriting is atrocious, but he's good about explaining. :-)

i don't know what everyone on here is talking about, i have never had a bad experience with him. he genuinely wants his students to do well. he assigns a lot of work but it's fair. he's a little scatter-brained but thats just his personality. he knows so much about music and he's stuck teaching it to bratty kids who don't really care.

I had Carter for Culture and Expression, the honors class. Let me first say that this was the most painful and torturous class I have ever taken. Every word out of that mans mouth was so convoluted, it was impossible to learn anything in the class.HORRIBLE PROFESSOR.Absolutely the worse experience i could imagine. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN HELP IT

He obviously knows his stuff... but here's my advice. Either take him for every section of music theory, or steer clear. I had him first semester and third semester, and the stuff he taught the 2nd semester was SO different from what I learned. I had to work my ass off for my B.

He's a nice guy, and a good professor, but if you have a short attention span... or a medium attention span, try a different professor. I usually don't have problems focusing, but I couldn't stop drifting with him at the blackboard. He isn't a difficult grader, but make sure you do your work, and he'll pay you back with a decent grade.

This guy is a stuttering moron!!! He says umm more time then president bush has said Iraq...he's the worst teacher i've ever had in my entire life!!!
