He's leaving the University this year, and I'm sad about it. He's excellent, but the grading is tough. Not a lot of clear direction on what will be on the tests. Still worth it.

You don't really know where you stand in his class because he doesn't use Canvas. His exams are lecture and textbook heavy, basically you won't pass if you don't read. Lectures are boring. Vague expectations of you but expects a lot from you. Nice guy, I guess.

This class was really boring and you don't have any clue where you stand because he never enters anything into blackboard. There's only the final, the midterm, a quiz, and the research paper. His lectures can get quite boring. If you even try to put your phone on silent, he will kick you out of class for being on your phone.

He's an incredibly hard grader when it comes to papers- most people don't do well. He gets stuck on lecture topics even though lecture is interesting. If you really read the readings and take notes on them then tests are fine. There's only a test, midterm, research paper and final.

Collins seems proud that the average GPA for his classes is a 1.5 or 1.7--as stated in his syllabus. He tells his students that he has literally written on former students papers, "how did you get into college," in all caps. His lectures are extremely interesting but hard to take notes on. Tests are hard. I'm passing, but I'd avoid his classes

He's a tough grader, but if you know your stuff and do what he tells you to (show up to lectures, listen in class, read the book, and do the assignments) you should be fine. He's a very nice guy and if you go ask him for help he's very willing to give it to you. His lectures are also very interesting. I would take him again.

Although they're fascinating, his lectures only brush on the topics you need to know. He'll mention one concept and go off on it. It's interesting, but I honestly learned more from one hour with the book than 1 week of class with him. Don't think you can pass without reading!

He's very personable and eager to help students. The tests are mostly on things covered in class, but a quick skim of the chapter helps. He gives students a hard time in a joking manner, w/o malice. If you show you're there to learn then you'll be on his "good" side. His review sessions are great. You get out of it more than what you put.

Worst teacher I've had at UNC. Extremely disrespectful to students and is unwilling to help anyone with anything. Extremely hard class to pass because his lectures are long and non descriptive. Majority of test is lecture so reading the book barely helps.

I did not like this teacher at all. I actually had to withdraw from his class because I was failing his class by the 1st test we had. He was extremely difficult to pay attention in class.

Majority of the class failed & the lucky ones passed with a D.For me this class was hard. The reading was just too much. He did not made a study guide. His class was based on 1quiz,1mid-term,a paper,& a final. The syllus was weak ! it doesn't tells you where to be at what time / the of your reading. Intresting lectures but it doesn't help.

This was the worst class I have taken yet at UNC. As a teacher he expects you to read the book but he never talks about any of the material. Instead he lectures on random things. You never learn maps of where places are, and his lectures are slow and boring and go off topic. His tests are pretty difficult. Don't take this class if you can help it.

This was the worst class I've taken yet. He never actually talks about specifics of what you need to know on the test, he tells stories the whole time that don't matter whatsoever, and his tests are impossible (small print in the book that shouldn't matter, does). DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM! Take it with Vowels, I retook it and received an A.

He is very boring and talks very slowly. He is not clear about what to study for the test. One test he told me study notes more than the text book, but the test was the opposite. And he is very sarcastic, sometimes rude. He doesn't seem to care about whether or not people pass his class.

Professor Collins is a poor professor. He only puts four things in the grade book. 1 quiz your midterm final and an essay. He is very bad at clarifying what he would like you to know for the exams. It is hard to communicate with him. On the tests he asks things never disussed. If you can get out of this before the drop deadline.

Charles Collins is a great professor... if he taught in the 1800's. He class time is spent with the following ration: 20 minutes actual: instruction 1 hour and 20 minutes with meaningless stories that "prove" his point. He's intelligent and really knows his stuff, but he grades solely on the midterm and final, which he does not prepare you for.

I really did not enjoy this class. The teacher has good intentions, but he is very strict. No extra credit. And your grade is based off of one quiz, three tests and a paper which are impossible to study for. Half of the class is failing or BARELY passing with a D. He's a really hard teacher.

Professor Collins was excellent. He cares about students and cares about the subject matter...plus he's really funny. He has a lot of experience in what he is teaching and has done a lot of research. There are not very many grades (2 tests and one paper) and they are rather difficult to study for, but he curves them. I highly recommend him!
