I loved my Urban Education class. It was the first time I actually learned about my classmates. He let us choose what to do with our final project.

I was very surprised to see the comments about Dr. Hyser. I was an ed major but the only class I had with him was non-ed major class - Urban Ed. My experience in that class was awesome. It was his first time teaching it and he was exploring along side us and truly valued our opinions and comments. Outside of class he was very supportive.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that he has made cry. He told me that if he were a principal he would never interview me or hire me. What's funny is that I had three job offers to choose from!

can't teach and is worse on advice. he's told at least four friends they wouldn't be teaching and now they have a combined 20+ years of teaching. don't take this guy.

I agree witht the previous comments. He told me that I could never be a teacher and that i did not have the personality to be a teacher.I ended up droping the major, and just graduating with one major. This is wrong. The education department shouldnt sit by and let this happen.

I'm surprised to read such negative comments about Dr. Hyser. I graduated in 2000, and I NEVER felt belittled by him. Now that I'm a teacher who's not having much success finding a stable job in IL, I wonder if maybe he comes off as harsh to "filter out" the less confident and less committed from a flooded job market.

I too have never had anyone make me cry before in a meeting. I met with him three times and he made me cry twice. I then decided to change my major (he told me i would never succeed in education). when he found out that I had changed majors, he told me that i would not succeed in my new major either... he is very negative, and not helpful at all

I have never had a teacher make me cry before. This man is an awful representation of what teachers are all about. It is our job to encourage students, not tell them they are not good enough and need to find a new major. His frequent lectures about how bad we are only shows his negative character

How unfortunate to read that he is STILL belittling education majors. I thought that I was the only one he put down and told that I would never make it as a teacher. That's pretty humorous considering I did make it as a teacher! Don't listen to him....

He takes the very best students and belittles them to the point where you realize he is intimidated by their intelligence. He doesn't give credit to those that are probably more creative than him. He even tells the best/brightest to rethink their major.

To be honest, I do not know why this man is a teacher. He is unhelpful and puts little faith in those aspiring to be educators. His belittling rants do nothing other than make education majors feel doubtful that they will succeed in the profession.
