Excellent professor, clear, organized, well prepared, interesting. A great speaker. He cares a lot about students and is always kind & understanding. He knows his stuff, a true scholar! The course is a good mix of lectures, outside speakers, mock trials, discussions, movies... Time flies. Great professor, great course, a must for everyone.

Weekend classes were easy- hardly needed to do the reading, but I haven't done the final yet. Do the mock trial- its super easy compared to the research paper which I have to write now. Good overview of basics of DV, your paper is the only opp to explore something more in depth. Class is kinda boring, but worth it.

He's a nice professor, however in Cities and Crimes was an extremely disappointing class. The books are excessively boring and repetitive. The items on the syllabus he calls "quizzes" are certainly more like exams. The professor does not grade any of the work so its all on the TA (not good). I would certainly not recommend this class/ professor.

Do not take Cities and Crime with this professor!! He gives "quizzes" with over 60 questions while telling you ahead of time not to worry about it. He required that you buy the newest edition of the text but creates the quizzes and teaches from the old edition. His lectures are straight reading from the text...didn't feel like I learned anything.

A difficult but current topic very useful to all of us, especially us women. This class is taught very well following a clear & well organized syllabus. Mock trials very interesting, instructive, realistic. Lots of outside interesting speakers. Lively atmosphere in class; ours was smaller class, 24 people, different backgrounds, lots to lear

This is a graduate seminar class. An outstanding class, great preparation for the comps. Lots of work though. Prof. uses a casebook and Socratic (law school) approach. Students must take active part in the class. Attendance part of the grade. Lots of discussion in class expected and encouraged. Prof. creates good friendly atmosphere. Highly

This is the course to take if you want to learn about the other side of the coin in crime: the victim/survivor. Prof. Viano is a recognized international experts in the field. He is obviously passionate about the subject and knows a lot. The class is run on 3 weekends per semester. There are lectures, outside speakers, media, group exercises... the

Prof. Viano is an excellent professor. He clearly loves teaching and is passionate about what he teaches. He is a very nice person, obviously cares about the students. Demanding but fair. Group projects are fun. Applies concepts to real life. Exams are very fair but one has to study to gaet a good grade. Clear, compelling, committed: a great prof!

I really didnot like him as a prof. There is no rubric for grading! the grades reflect his mood, he missed many classes, his TA was awkward, overall poor quality. Little focus on actual concepts regarding cities and crime. NOT HELPFUL, office hours are worthless. I very much do not recommend his class, I didn't learn anything new

Legitimately the worst class I have ever had. How can human trafficking be so boring? Dude just put the readings on the overhead and pretty much read through them. I was bored to tears and now all I know about trafficking is the difference between trafficking and smuggling. Really sweet guy but an awful teacher.

took his cities and crime class. It is a gen ed class and also for my major. I am a senior and have been taking justice classes my whole time at AU but I still did horribly in the class. He's a nice enough guy but he is an awful teacher. The assigned text is awful, the class is boring, and his quizzes are awful. do NOT take this professor.

Great professor, funny, very knowledgeable, interested in students, clear, fair, and reasonable. The "coursebook" is the main reading Study questions for class discussion & quizzes provided in advance. Easy to do well in class. Short paper, group presentation. Fair way to get good grades Historical approach fun & interesting. Highly recommended.

The class is nothing but readings and questions. You have three quizzes that you can completely "BS" and no one gets below a C on. He's NEVER in his office during office hours but if you do well on the quizzes you shouldn't really care. The best part is there is no final exam!!!! Be prepared to have learned nothing by the end of the semester!

VIANO IS SOMEWHAT BORING. HE KEEPS YOU IN CLASS THE ENTIRE TIME. QUIZZES ARE ONLY ON READING AS ARE THE LECTURES. CLASS SHOULD BE A HISTORY CLASS, NOT JUSTICE. REALL BORING. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.

Also, the exam is not difficult, it just makes you think about what you learned. The journal, another part of your grade,is a reminder of the trip and worth doing well not only because you get graded on it but you will be happy you have it to look back on in years to come. i made mine into a scrapbook complete with pictures and great Viano quotes!

BEST CLASS EVER!If you can go it's more than worth your time. The actual class invovles going to different EU institutions, like the Peace Palace and ICJ,and hearing about their role in trying to unify Europe.Viano is extremely knowledgeable about the all the cities we visited and gives students plenty of free time to explore the cities on your own
