Comment:

Dr. DeRise is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is constantly making jokes, which make you want to listen to what he's saying even more. He's actually quite helpful if YOU make the effort to ask for help. The ones who are saying he wasn't helpful obviously weren't taking the time to speak with him privately. So sad to see him retire soon!

If you do the homework and come to class with a good understanding of basic algebra you'll do great. I ended up with a score of well above 100 due to his very generous grading system. He took the time to bring interesting problems and history to class that weren't in the textbook. The best professor I've had so far.

His class is very fun. He has a sense of humor; he always make his students laugh all the time. I recommend him to everyone because he understand his student's level of skills. He knows what's the best for his students. If you take him as your professor, I guarantee you that he will pass you as long as you show hard work in class.

I HATED math until I took this class. Yes, he's hard and attendance is necessary, but the classes are engaging and a blast. I loved it. Just do your homework and take GOOD notes. You'll be set.

Interesting class combination. He himself is very entertaining and more often than not hilarious. Now the actual class was rather hard. His tests are much harder than what is in the book - study his "typical test questions" as much you do the book. However, he is VERY helpful and gives curves. In summary, I would take him again.

I had him last semester (Spring 06). I personally hated Algebra until I took his class, he was very good at reinforcing the concepts in an easy way and he was funny. Seemed really laid back and his tests were basically homework problems, if you do the homework then your golden. best math class ever!

he is maybe too passionate about math and has his quirks, kind of funny/cute. he will give extra help if you go to his office so do so, not just whining and do nothing like some ppl. the tests are kinda hard but he gives partial credit and the most problems are very similar to ones in the homework, its just hard to have time to do homework

I've had Derise for three classes, I think he does a very good job teaching. He is very enthusiastic and kind of funny sometimes. I reccomend him especially to people who like math. If you are very interested in math, he lets you do extra work for honors credit which gets you an H on your transcript and a letter of reccomendation.
