Comment:
The first class I took with Joe was Freshman English. He assigned Celine's "Death on the Installment Plan" as the first book to read and discuss. Those of us who were left after the great majority of the class dropped out were treated to a remarkable introduction to literature. He's the only professor I remember forty years later. Brilliant.

I took his creative creative writing class in the fall of 1969. I received my degree in 1972. I was just back from overseas and new to SDSU. He was lightning! He fed my interests with Ginsberg, Celine and I turned him on to Mailer. He was blunt, possessed and talented. I owe him a great deal. He does not suffer fools at all.

Professor Butler is an incredible teacher, I feel very lucky to have had him before he retired. Yes, the class is very challenging, but it's an opportunity to really learn., and since he curves the whole class everyon gets between an A and C when all is said and done. Fantastic professor, SDSU is lucky to have someone of his caliber.

A brilliant man with a passion for literature that has yet to be matched by any other professor I've had. Those who dislike him, misunderstand him, or they are simply unwilling to open their minds.

Very good teacher, immense scholar, interesting human being. Take him just because he will open up things that you've never considered. Tough but not unfair.

the only thing he grades you on are 3 tests and a paper. you read one novel every two weeks. his approach is very interesting. he's funny in that he is bitter towards the world. but in his office hours he's really cool. but his tests are damn hard. he thinks that everyone in the whole class is under-performing. but whatever.

I've gone to every class and taken notes and done the reading and this is the first class I've ever failed. If you can avoid him I completely would. He is a confusing lecturer and his grading scale is ridiculous (the entire class is based on 100 points). DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!

I have to agree with the previous comment. I've had him twice. If you actually LISTEN to what he's trying to teach you, you'll realize the value of what he's saying. Yes, he's VERY old school, but just get over it and try to learn from him; you'll absolutely benefit from taking him. Even he admits that the reading is tough, but just hang in there.

This guy's really misunderstood. I'm sure he wouldn't be as bitter if his students actually did readings. Butler's definitely the scholarly type. His lectures are very informative. If people didn't doze in class, they'd see how passionate he is. It's hard these days when English majors only read sparknotes.

I had him 5 years ago... I am a teacher of English now and wish I could tell him what I really think, "YOU NEED TO GET SOME SENSITIVITY TRAINING". I wrote a paper on J. Austen & he tore it apart, because I didn't see Mansfield Park's heroine as a "Slave". Whatever. I'm getting my Master's in English Lit, no thanks to him.If you have him, hangtuff.

Some of these comments can't be about the same guy whose class I've been tortured by all semester. He is the single worst professor I've had in my entire academic career. Pointless, boring lectures. Rude. Misses the point of students' comments yet thinks the concepts are beyond our comprehension. Nice attitude for an educator! HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!

very intelligent... knows what he's talking about but tends to ramble. 4 exams & 1 paper. the exams are hard b/c he asks you for specifics but it's closed book. you have to go to class & take notes b/c he just wants you to recite exactly what he lectured on. paper was easy but frustrating b/c he didn't explain it until 2 days before it was due.

A great professor. If you are listening and open to learning, you will, if not, and many students at sdsu are both arrogant and dumb (a bad combo) - you will not learn anything, either from this prof or anyone in the world.

One of the last of the old guard to still be hanging-around SDSU, take him while you can. Chances are this University will never have another like him unless they decide one day to put Academics above Sports and Profits.

Gruff, Short-tempered (at times), but brilliant! Loves DH Lawrence (dripping). Slams you only when you're lazy and wasting his time. Definitely worth taking a class from. If you show interest, he'll give you his all.

This is an amazing man who can change your thoughts (and your life) if you just allow yourself to listen to him. Brilliant, compassionate, engaging, did I mention brilliant? This is the second class that I have taken with Butler (600) and I will continue to take classes with him as he is what I imagined the graduate school "experience" would be.
