I personally dont like the man but as long as you do the work and read the assignments he will love you (like me) and give you more assistance. He lets you rewrite the essays as many times as needed and gives you advice. as long as you read the book, you will have no problem in the class but if you dont read you will fail. Get on his good side!xD

If your an education major dont take the class. He will automatically give you a C for being and education major even if you do all the work and come to class. He is rude, disrespectful, not kind or caring, and will set you up for failure. He gave me my first C in my whole career of As in college just because Im an education major and he told me

I swear, I wish I went back in time and never took any of McCarthy's classes! I mean seriously, the man is so strict and he really is the master of pop quizzes! He doesn't even tell you when the next quiz is going to be! He just throws it at you! Just tell us when the next quiz is going to be so we can be prepared to study! It's not hard!

Professor McCarthy is firm in his beliefs and might be a tough grader, but to me he's been incredibly kind and fair. I've never had any problems with him, he's interesting and fun to talk to and has led an interesting life, and doesn't go back on his own beliefs just to please someone. One of the best guys at STAC, if you ask me.

Comment:
While he lacks in education, he also lacks in intelligence. Picks from contradictory, biased sources to support his view on writing. His grading is biased and lacking in experience. With only 2 years spent in college, some time in prison, and a cowardly spree in the marines, he has made his way to ruin education with his own dislike for teaching.

Granted he grades the way he wants you to write but he actually makes you a better writer. He'll have you read more interesting books or stories than other classes which is good. It's just a difficult time at first to understand the way he wants you to develop. Very helpful.

Terrible teacher. He's rude/condescending. Talks about nothing related to the materials. You have to write the way he wants you to write. Avoid if you value your GPA.

McCarthy has led a very interesting life. He draws on his experiences in his writing and encourages his students to do the same. When I was his student he really pushed me to dig deeper and do something meaningful. He's passionate about poetry and creative writing. I think he has a distaste for conventional pedagogy and I admired that.

I actually liked McCarthy. He was understanding and sympathetic at the end of the semester that I really did struggle. He is not the clearest teacher but he is a nice man and not mean spirited.

you have to write the way HE wants, and no other way, unless you want a bad grade. there were so many papers to write and all we did in class was reread other peoples papers and grade them. i never got an A in the class and my final grade was a C+ along with many others. its impossible to get an A in that class, unless you are his favorite.

Professor McCarthy is awesome! Not only is he eccentric, talented, humorous, fastidious and intriguing, but he truly knows what it takes to become a writer. I would kill to take his C.W. courses again. I've had some good English professors before, but none of them have stimulated my passion for writing like he has.

Uses a teaching style that most are not used to (at our college anyway), so some panic and say he makes no sense. Just wants people to think outside of the box and improve/give SOME effort. Very intimidating at first, though.
