This class is really all about your GSI. I never attended Sluga's office hours, but rather my GSI's. The lectures are all online and he reads from them during class. The readings I found very interesting. It helps to go to office hours and do the readings if you want an A. There are 3 midterms and a final. All are in-class essays. He's a nice guy!

I liked the lectures in Philosophy 2, Prof. Sluga was entertaining to listen to. Make sure you read the class reader and get a good understanding of what each of the philosophers is saying. The midterms are in-class essays (no notes), which require knowing the material well.

Amazing professor. I could tell that everyday he absolutely loved what he taught. I very much enjoyed coming to lecture as he was interesting and light-hearted. Only problem is he sometimes skimmed over such hard topics but my GSI helped a lot in that area. Go to office hours!! Exams are hard. 3 midterms and final are all in-class essays.

He recently published a book, so this semester was an expansion or complement to that. Attending lectures is essential to success on the three papers assigned over the semester. You interact mostly with GSI, but the only time I went to his office hours, he was very open to discussion. Cares about material and student's understanding. Brilliant!

Professor Sluga's lectures were fun and engaging. His readings were manageable, interesting, and exposed us to ideas from many great philosophers in a short time. However, his expectations for midterms and finals were very unclear both to us and his GSIs and much of what he taught were his own theories and opinions. Still, worth taking.

I took Sluga's Wittgenstein class ages ago. His treatment of Wittgenstein's Notebooks was brilliant, and his discussion of Russell literally changed the course of my life. Sluga doesn't use notes but he was perfectly prepared for every lecture. He loves his subject, and would giggle sometimes in delight at oddball ideas. I love him.

Sluga is an amazing professor. His lectures are clear, simple, brilliant, and, best of all, inspiring. I left every lecture excited and thoughtful. He does not speak very loudly, so sit in the front or you might dose off. But he is hilarious, in a very dry, German way. Oh, and the tests are very easy.

He is one of the few philosophy professors who have taken the time to explain things in office hours, outside of class or any other venue. I remember walking to class one day and he asked me how I was doing, and told me that what I asked in lecture was great. He also does a good job of covering the material without making it confusing.

Good lecturer, interesting subject. Sluga was Foucault's friend, knew the material very well. None of it sounds rehearsed, very interesting up until the end of the semester.

Definetely my favorite class at Berkeley. He's a lot of fun in class, especially with his German accent and even more so when he emphasizes words. Makes things very clear. He really knows the material. I found very impressive his ability to draw together different comments in Nietzsche's writing and articulate several possible interpretations.

great lecture. a little boring sometimes, but i expect that from philosophy classes: im much more interested in the readings, and professors do have a tough time "teaching" philosophy. But Sluga did a great job - and was obviously excited to talk about nietzsche and shopenhauer.

Sluga comes equipped with a devious little German accent. Though in the Analytic tradition he sees through what many of his contemporaries (like Searle) do not. Sluga's lectures on Nietzsche were some of the best treatments I've heard. His analysis of Frege's works is rigorous, thorough, insightful, and beautifully tedious.

Despite the fact that it's introductory, this course is ONLY for those truly interested in philosophy. He goes off topic frequently and you're never sure what is and isn't important. VERY BORING...nice accent though

Foundations of Analytic Philosophy was not the most fun class, but Sluga is a great teacher. He is a historicist and he tells some good jokes. I heard his Nietzsche class was great.
